Motorist Sends Cyclist to Hospital in West Mercer Crash — Mercer Island Police Blotter

Mercer Island police say a Seattle cyclist was rushed to a hospital June 13 on West Mercer Way after a local woman pulled out in front of him, causing a collision.

A 66-year-old woman driving a 230 Series Mercedes-Benz turned left onto West Mercer Way from SE 30th Street when she drove into the path of a cyclist, who collided with the front bumper and hood of the car at 6:52 p.m.

The man, 57, was ejected from the bicycle, severely damaging it and causing obvious injuries to his left shoulder and hamstring. He was later taken to Swedish Hospital for treatment.

The driver was uninjured and later cited for failing to yield.

Two HP laptop computers were reported stolen overnight from the Yellow Wood Academy preschool at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Moped Rider Shaken up as Motorists — Not Cyclists — Yield to Police
Vehicles in the northbound in the 4700 block of Island Crest Way tried to yield for two police vehicles headed southbound with lights flashing at 3:35 p.m. A 17-year-old teenage girl riding a moped tried to pull over but was blocked by several cyclists and ran into the right rear bumper of a car that pulled over and stopped. Firefighter EMTs checked the girl but found no injuries and she was given a courtesy ride home by police.

Tennessee Utility Company Defrauded With Islander's ID
Unknown subject opened a utility account in Tennessee in 2012 using the victim's identity. The utility company sent a bill for $543 to collections, who then located the resident to recover the funds.

Paypal Fraud Attempt
An unknown subject tried to fraudulently open a Paypal account using the victim's personal information. The account was denied and police notified.

Thieves Fraudulently Buy Over $2,000 in Goods on Grandmother's ATM Card
Unauthorized purchases equaling $2,020.22 were made on a 89-year-old grandmother's Bank of America Visa card. The transactions were reported by the victim's grandaughter who holds power of attorney for her.

Felon on the Lam Arrested on MI
Police investigating a suspicious circumstances call on the 8400 block of 68th Street identified a 44-year-old local man wanted on a Washington state Department of Corrections warrant. The man was arrested at 7 p.m. and booked into the King County Jail.

Three-Car Crash on ICW Causes Injuries
A three-car accident occurred in the northbound lanes of the 4600 block of Island Crest Way at 8:13 p.m. A 43-year-old woman driving a Toyota Prius slammed into the back of a vehicle operated by a 53-year old man. The impact pushed the victim into another vehicle infront of him, and caused injuries to his chest and leg.

Toyota Prius Sideswiped in Hit-and-Run
The daughter of a local Toyota Prius owner was visiting a friend's house on the 4000 block of 93rd Ave. SE when she discovered someone had side-swiped the car and damaged the driver-side mirror at 6:45 p.m., and called police.

City Loses Traffic Counter to Theives
Theives hauled away acity-owned Gamma NT portable traffic counter at the entrance to the Mercer Island Community Center. City staff reported the theft at 2:06 p.m.

Luther Burbank Park Dumpster Catches Fire
A city parks employee discovered the aftermath of a dumpster fire at 9:07 a.m. in the north Luther Burbank Park parking lot. Police suspect another employee clearing hot coals out of nearby barbecues might be to blame.
