Police Advice to Protect Kids & Pets in Summer
Mercer Island Police Officer Rob Jira offers several sensible safety tips for keeping your children and pets safe during the summer heat.
(Ed Note: Safety tips and information are posted monthly on the city's website by Mercer Island Police Officer Rob Jira, and reproduced here in cooperation with the MIPD.)
The best rule of thumb when considering the idea of leaving your children and pets in the car during warm weather is simply this: DON'T!
Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can quickly rise well above 100 degrees.
Outside Temperature / Temperature inside your car:
70 degrees = 100 degrees
75 degrees = 110 degrees
80 degrees = 120 degrees
85 degrees = 130 degrees
90 degrees = 140 degrees
If you are planning on running into the store or even making a quick stop somewhere, remember just cracking the window of your car is not enough to prevent your children and pets from being seriously affected by the sun's heat!
