Police Blotter: $2,000 in Cash Stolen From East Seattle Home

The following information from Aug. 15-22 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

report no leads in the theft of approximately $2,000 in cash from inside a large hollow family piggy bank in the shape of a Crayola crayon.

The family reported the cash missing from the home on the 2700 block of 68th Avenue SE on Aug. 23 and believed the cash went missing sometime between Aug. 11-22. 

Police questioned a 27-year-old female resident in the case, but no suspect information was given, and no other items were reported stolen from the residence. The family said they had been collecting the loose change and money inside the now-empty red Crayola crayon replica over a period of 20 years.

Aug. 15

Milk Bottle Bandit Cashes in at QFC

A man returned 13 empty glass milk containers in exchange for $24.05 at the North-end  at 4:30 a.m. The man drew suspicion when he left the premises on foot and noticed the milk crates where empty milk containers are kept were strewn about. Another employee said the same thing happened a few nights ago when the man had returned five or six containers.

Aug. 16

Bike Theft at Park-and-Ride

A Snoqualmie man reported his blue Bianchi 21-speed bicycle, valued at $800, was stolen from the sometime between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

Stoves Stolen from Town Center Apartment Complex

A building manager of reported the theft of three new stoves delivered on Aug. 12. A large gate meant to secure the area was left open after garbage from the same area was picked up and unknown suspects arrived on Aug. 13 and loaded the stoves into the back of an red extended-cab pick-up truck, similar to a Ford Ranger.

Luther Burbank Prowlers Return

A 19-year-old Bellevue resident reported a BMW X5 was broken into a a purse containing $200 in cash and other goods taken from the passenger seat parked at the north parking lot at 5:45 p.m. The teen saw two asian men in their 20s with short hair in the area and believed they might be involved in the vehicle prowl.

Aug. 17

Another Drunk Boater Busted on Lake Washington

Mercer Island Marine Patrol officers arrested a 30-year-old resident for boating under the influence on Lake Washington at 7:25 p.m. The man argued with police and refused a breathalyzer test. His Sea Ray motorboat was towed from the water and impounded and the man was booked into the King County Jail.

Prowler Tries to Pass Forged Check

A suspect in the Aug. 14 vehicle prowl of an unlocked Chevy Suburban on the 2800 block of 67th Avenue SE tried to pass a forged check at a local bank Aug. 17. Also stolen from the vehicle was a Motorola blue tooth ear bud, $30 in loose change and a GPS device, worth a total estimated $265.

Vandals Slice Up Batting Cage 

The owner of a residence on the 4200 block of Mercerwood Drive reported his batting cage netting had been vandalized over the past three weeks. He found the netting sliced in half and thrown in the neighbor's garbage can and a bucket of baseballs thrown out all over the street.

Aug. 18

Caregiver Accused of Taking Patient's Checks, Meds

Police are investigating reports a Seattle woman reportedly stole and forged checks and pain medication prescriptions of a 96-year-old resident. The suspect was providing in-home care to the resident in her home on the 4400 block of Forest Avenue.

Aug. 20

QFC Shopping Cart Game Earns Teen Ticket

Police cited a local teen for joyriding in the  parking lot at 2:40 a.m. Using the Mercedes-Benz ML320 SUV he was driving, he propelled a shopping cart into another shopping cart and caused it to collide with a parked Subaru Legacy, damaging the front passenger door.

Knife-Wielding Man Threatens Own Family With Death 

A 49-year-old man held a butcher knife to his wife's throat at around 10:55 p.m. and threatened to kill her at a residence on the 3400 block of 97th Avenue SE. The man later threatened to kill himself with the five-inch blade until police took him into custody. As police subdued him, he told a Shoreline man visiting the home in Russian that when he got out of prison he would kill everyone present. The incident was also witnessed by the couple's 14-year-old daughter.

Aug. 21

Sun-Blinded Teen Runs Light in ICW Crash

A 16-year-old Issaquah teenager ran a stoplight at Island Crest Way driving westbound on SE 40th Street at 7 p.m. collided with a Ford F1 pickup truck, causing minor injuries. Both vehicles were totaled in the crash and a city light pole and pedestrian crossing button were damaged. The 27-year-old Bellevue man and a fellow passenger were transported to hospital and the teenager, who said he couldn't see the light due to the direct sunlight, was cited for inattentive driving.

Aug. 22

East Seattle Vehicle Prowl

A 37-year-old resident reported the theft of his vehicle registration and cell phone charger from his Toyota Prius sometime over the past two weeks. The vehicle prowl reportedly occurred over the past two weeks while the car was parked at his residence on the 2800 block of 68th Avenue SE.

Driver Rear-ended at Pedestrian Crossing

A 25-year-old Bellevue man crashed into the back of a local resident stopped at the 42nd Street pedestrian crossing as someone crossed Island Crest Way. The GMC Envoy SUV collided with the Ford Focus at approximately 11:15 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Disturbance on 73rd Place

An anonymous caller reported a shouting match between a husband and wife at 6:24 p.m. inside a residence on the 7800 block of SE 73rd Place. Police spoke to the wife — who had left the residence — and husband and confirmed no assault had taken place. The family's children were taken to their maternal grandmother's home for the night.

Excellent assessments today, both by Mr. Horn here, and by Mr. Cero in today's MI Reporter. The keyRead More is that we need new blood in both the legislature, and in our City Council, to actually better understand the problems at hand and potential real solutions we'll need. Many of our elected and appointed officials are poorly representing their constituency. For example, Ms. Clibborn could readily put the brakes on this I-90 tolling tax diversion to fund 520 fiasco, in a heartbeat, through her leadership position for state transportation. But despite that tolling is a terrible precedent, and could even undermine the entire national interstate highway system, Ms. Clibborn is CHOOSING NOT TO fight I-90 bridge tolling. Apparently she and some of our waffling weak kneed Council members have made their choices about this issue, and about other debacles, like our seriously flawed highly subsidized mass transit, and our pending loss of carpool lanes. Now it is approaching the time to make our decisions, in the next election.

Great article Jim. So despite the bad decisions and bad policy by the legislature, we can gatherRead More that the way out of this mess is to raise gas tax appropriately to pay for the roads. Additionally I might add, we can scale down on the upgrades and delay constructing the approaches to the 520 bridge. Scaling back these upgrades should not affect the safety or construction schedule of the 520 bridge and may eliminate the funding shortage entirely.
