Police Blotter: Thefts and an Underage DUI

The following information from April 25-30 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

April 25

Items stolen from Mercer Island Thrift Shop
Police were dispatched to the after a collectable item valued at $75 was stolen. Video evidence of the theft was provided to police.

April 26

Purse stolen at community center
A woman contacted police after her purse was stolen and later found in a trash can at the , minus cash, gift cards, credit cards and identification. The woman had left the purse sitting on a chair for approximately 15-20 minutes. When she returned the purse was gone. A teenage girl was reported to have been asking about the purse and she was later seen walking away with the purse. Surveillance video shows the girl taking the purse.

April 27

items stolen from unlocked car
A woman contacted police after she discovered that a $100 calculator and approximately $5 in change was stolen from her unlocked car when it was parked outside the building on 77th Avenue Southeast.

Jewelry stolen from home
A woman living on West Mercer Way contacted police to report that several pieces of pearl jewelry were missing from her home.

Disabled parking pass stolen
A woman contacted police after the disabled parking pass was stolen from her unlocked car while it was sitting at a gas pump at a station on 78th Avenue Southeast.

April 28

Kayak stolen from shoreline
A woman living on East Mercer Way contacted police after she discovered the theft of her Tsunami 140 kayak. The kayak is valued at approximately $1,200.

April 29

Wallet found in ziploc bag
A girl contacted police after she found a ziploc bag containing an empty brown wallet and a 1996 membership card for the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. The ziploc bag had been found in bushes behind Mercerdale Park Woods.

Phone stolen at chuch benefit turns up in Seattle
A woman contacted police to report that her iPhone was missing. She had been at a benefit at New Hope Church where members of a youth group from Seattle were also in attendance. The phone was later located in West Seattle via MobileMe.

17-year-old arrested for DUI
Police arrested a 17-year-old Mercer Island boy for driving under the influence after he was pulled over for a traffic stop and found to have been drinking. An intoxicated passenger was giving a ride home and cited for Minor in Possession. The driver later provided two breath samples of .048 and .049.

April 30

Employee suspected of stealing checks
A man contacted police to report that an employee stole seven blank checks from an unsecured filing cabinet in the office on 77th Avenue Southeast. The employee was quickly interviewed and terminated. She later attempted to have an acquaintance pass a check in Hawaii for $24,743.56.

Graffiti found at park
Police were dispatched to a park on 84th Avenue Southeast after 9/11 conspiracy messages were found spray painted on a concrete walkway. The approximate cost to repair the walkway is $200.
