Police Blotter: Deer Killed in Island Crest Way Traffic Accident

The following information from Oct. 17 - 27 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A 59-year-old Bellevue woman driving at night on Island Crest Way Oct. 24 struck a deer, killing the animal.

The Toyota Camry was heading northbound on the 4400 block of Island Crest Way when the deer emerged from the roadside and the woman struck the animal at around 7:30 p.m.

Police responding to the incident located the deer, which had been dragged to the side of the road by bystanders. The woman was reportedly unharmed, and the drivers-side front and roof of the vehicle sustained damage.

Woman Scammed By Indian Con Artist

A resident of a home on the 9100 block of North Mercer Way reported receiving a call on Oct. 13 from a company that was going out of business, and requested that the woman give her credit card information so a refund could be made to her account. A few hours later, she discovered there were 3 charges on the account for cash at a Western Union branch and sent to a foreign address in India.

Two Teen Girls Hit By SUV in South-End Crosswalk

A 70-year-old Mercer Island Man turning off of SE 68th Street and into the south-end struck two teenage girls in a crosswalk at 1:25 p.m. The driver of the Chevy Tahoe claimed he did not see the youths until he struck them and the victims stated they didn't remember seeing the SUV coming at them until he struck them. The man was cited for failure to yield.

Oct. 18

Shoplifters Banned from North-End QFC

store security sought to ban two men from the north-end supermarket after they were caught shoplifting several Odwalla-brand beverages. The business declined to press charges against the 49-year-old resident and a 50-year-old Renton man.

Boy Arrested; Stabbed Mother With Ballpoint Pen

An angry 12-year-old boy was arrested at 8:19 p.m. after he stabbed his mother in the arm with a ball-point pen at his home on the 2700 block of SE 68th Street. 

Oct. 19

Car Prowler Strikes on 76th Ave SE

A resident of a home on the 2900 block of 76th Ave. SE reported the theft of his backpack from inside a parked Dodge Ram pickup truck sometime overnight. The vehicle was prowled from the passenger side window, which was broken to gain entry.

Attempted Car Theft on East Mercer Way

Unknown suspects tried to steal a Dodge Durango parked in front of a residence on the 3700 block of East Mercer Way. The ignition switch and plastic coupler were damaged in the attempt, but nothing was reported stolen.

Oct. 22

Drunk Driver Busted on I-90

A 19-year-old Federal Way woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI at 1:24 a.m. after police stopped her Mitsubishi Eclipse for improper lane travel while driving westbound on Interstate 90. Her BAC was later measured at .110 and .107, above the legal limit of .08.

Angry Ex-Boyfriend a Suspect in Vandalized Car

A 22-year-old Mountlake Terrace man staying overnight at a female companion's residence on the 7600 block of SE 27th Street reported his Toyota Corolla was vandalized overnight by a known suspect. All of his windows were shattered, tires flattened and the body of the car sustained multiple scratches and dents. Damages were estimated at approximately $5,500.

Cyclist Ejected From Bike by Downed Power Line

A Seattle cyclist riding southbound on the 5300 block of East Mercer Way at 7:20 a.m. struck a live, downed power line hanging across the roadway, ejecting him the bicycle. Mercer Island firefighter EMTs treated the man's injuries to his knee, hip and collar bone and he was later taken to hospital by his wife. Poor weather and low light visibility were thought to contribute to the cause of the accident.

Driver Busted for Removing DUI Ignition Interlock

A 41-year-old Kirkland woman was arrested around noon on the 4400 block of West Mercer Way for driving her Buick Century without a valid driver's license. She was also cited for removing an interlocking device from her vehicle's ignition to prevent her from driving while intoxicated by alcohol.

Fight Over Lumber Draws Reckless Endangerment Citation

Police cited a 63-year-old resident for reckless endangerment at 3 p.m. after responding to a dispute over salvage lumber and nails left on the man's property on the 3800 block of 82nd Avenue SE. The resident damaged the victim's truck with heavy machinery while trying to remove the lumber, and in so doing, nearly struck them with the materials.

Drunk Driver Sideswipes Toyota Prius

A 43-year-old resident driving a Mercedes-Benz southbound on the 7100 block of West Mercer Way at 5:10 p.m. veered off the roadway and struck the rear corner of a parked Toyota Prius. The woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI and her blood alcohol was later measured at over three-times the legal limit. A 16-year-old teenager sitting in the Toyota was unharmed.

Oct. 23

Man Finds Stolen Documents From Bellevue Crime Scene

A 32-year-old Bellevue man located several vehicle registration and owner's manuals at 2:28 p.m. on the 5200 block of East Mercer Way. The materials are believed to belong to vehicles prowled in Bellevue.

Teenage SUV Driver Rear-Ends Motorist on ICW

An 18-year-old resident crashed her Land Rover SUV into the back of a Chrysler Pacifica driving southbound at 2:32 p.m. on the 4600 block of Island Crest Way. The car was stopped behind several other cars waiting for a pedestrian to cross the crosswalk. Police noticed a large wet coffee stain on the woman's pants from a beverage she was holding while driving. She was cited for second-degree negligent driving.

Police Smash-In Door on Welfare Check

Police smashed in a door of a residence on the 8000 block of SE 33rd Place, with consent of the owner, while trying to check on the welfare of a resident.

Oct. 25

Car Thieves Steal Infiniti QX4 from Mercerwood Drive

A 55-year-old resident of a home on the 9700 block of Mercerwood Drive reported his Infiniti QX4 was stolen from his residence's driveway sometime overnight. Another vehicle, Toyota Tacoma, was also prowled. No suspect information was available.

Car Prowlers Rummage Through Porsche 911

A 51-year-old resident of a home on the 3700 block of East Mercer Way reported her Porsche 911 was broken-into overnight and a leather document folder, registration and some eyeglasses were missing from inside. The vehicle was believed to have been unlocked.

MIHS Band Trumpeter Loses Horn

The father of a student reported the loss of his trumpet in the MIHS Band instrument storage room at the end of the school day.

Woman's Wallet Stolen From Work

A Bellevue woman's wallet was taken from her reception desk while at work on the 3000 block of 80th Avenue SE. Two transactions after the theft were made at the , and an employee from the business was at her place of work earlier in the day.

Identity Fraud Victim Contacted By Banks

The resident of a home on the 4200 block of Shoreclub Drive received calls from First National Bank and Everbank, notifying him of an attempt by someone trying to open a bank account using the victim's personal information.

Oct. 26

Graffiti Vandals Hit Mary Wayte Pool

Unknown vandals painted graffiti on the back of the building sometime between Oct. 20-23. The graffiti, which was on the west end of the south wall of the building, appeared to be done with black spray paint and was painted over before the report was filed.

Woman Violated No-Contact Order

A 44-year-old Seattle woman violated a protection order when she tried to contact a local man by text and phone at 11:34 a.m.

Runaway Teenager Reported

A parent of a 14-year-old boy on the 2400 block of 64th Ave. SE ran away earlier in the day and failed to return home after school.

Oct. 27

Driver Arrested for No Valid License

Stopped for expired tabs on the 4000 block of Island Crest Way, a 25-year-old resident was arrested for driving without a valid driver's license at 1:55 a.m.

Early-Morning DUI Arrest for Seattle Woman

Police arrested a 22-year-old Seattle woman on suspicion of DUI at 3:25 a.m. after her Lexus IS 300 almost collided with cement barrier exiting off freeway at E. Mercer Way before getting back on the freeway and failing to signal.
