Police Blotter: Father Uses Taser on Mother as Daughter Calls 911 in Domestic Assault

The following information from July 1-16 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A 50-year-old resident turned himself in after he reportedly attacked his wife with a taser on July 14 at their home on the 2400 block of 84th Avenue SE, according to Mercer Island Police.

The man was allegedly broke into the home and started an argument with his wife at around 6:45 p.m. when he assaulted his wife with the taser, causing injuries. The couple's daughter witnessed the attack and called 911, but the man had fled the scene in his white Mercedes-Benz before police arrived. The man later surrendered himself to police custody at the with a lawyer present. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and first-degree burglary.

The car was also impounded by police pending a search warrant.

July 1

Local Lawyer Smacks California Man

A 50-year-old San Jose, Calif. man involved in a legal negotiation at 11:15 a.m. inside a private residence on the 8600 block of North Mercer Way reported being hit in the upper arm by a local resident acting as an attorney for the opposing party. The man said he was not injured but said the incident  "shocked and scared him."

Teak Surfers Draw Drunk Boating Arrest

A Mercer Island Marine Patrol arrested a Bellevue man on suspicion of boating while intoxicated by alcohol at 6:05 p.m. Police initially stopped the boat near the in Lake Washigton after they noticed the four passengers on board the Reinell speedboat were attempting to ride the wake of the boat as it was moving — a maneuver identified as "Teak Surfing" by Washington state law. The 24-year-old man admitted he had been drinking alcohol and refused both a breathalyzer and a field sobriety test. 

July 5

Dominican Fraud Cons Local Man Out of $17,000

An 85-year-old resident of a home on the 7800 block of SE 30th Street reported at 9 a.m. that he had been the victim of fraud involving approximately $17,000. The man said he was contacted by someone claiming to be a relative in distress and asked the man to wire the money to an account in the Dominican Republic. He wired the money July 7, and reported the alleged fraud July 14.

July 8

Mercerdale Park iPhone Theft

A resident reported he had accidentally dropped his iPhone in at around 5 p.m. and returned 10 minutes later to discover it had vanished. When he called the phone there was no answer, and a second attempt to call the phone went straight to voicemail. The owner estimated the loss at $450.

July 9

Drunk Boater Arrested Near Faben Point

Mercer Island Marine Patrol arrested a Seattle man at 6:45 p.m. on suspicion of boating under the influence near and . The Maxum motorboat was stopped for expired registration and police officers noticed a "strong odor of intoxicants emanating from his person." The 34-year-old man failed a field sobriety test and a portable breathalyzer test indicated his blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit. The boat was turned over to a sober passenger.

July 10

Marine Patrol Snags Loose Kayak

A Marine Patrol recovered an abandoned kayak at 3:32 p.m. from Meydenbauer Bay. The 12-foot-long red "Spectrum Duo" kayak was placed into safekeeping at the Mercer Island Police Department.

July 11

Sun Seekers Lose Swimsuit in Luther Burbank Car Prowl

Two students reported a Volvo S40 parked in the north parking lot of was broken into sometime between 2 - 3:45 p.m. A Liz Claiborne messenger-style bag containing a bathing suit, tanning lotion and a wallet containing ID, cash and valuables was taken from the back seat. 

July 12

Home Burglar Swipes Nine Checkbooks

A resident of a home on the 4200 block of East Mercer Way reported her home had been burglarized sometime between 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. that afternoon. The suspect forced entry with a foot stone through a plate glass window that entered into the home's basement. Police investigators determined the burglars left throughout the front door. The victim, a 76-year-old resident, reported a total of nine check books from nine separate accounts and a laptop computer were stolen.

July 13

Thieves Pry 'VW' Emblem off Car

A resident of a home on the 4000 block of 91st Avenue SE reported at noon a part of her silver Volkswagen Jetta was vandalized and stolen sometime after 9 p.m. the previous evening. The 43-year-old woman reported her Volkswagen "VW" emblem was "pried off the back of the vehicle" with a screwdriver, leaving several scratches near where the emblem was.

July 14 

Police Commit Suicidal Girl to Overlake Hospital

A suicidal 17-year-old girl was involuntarily committed to a mental health facility in Overlake Hospital at 2:30 a.m. after she threatened to take her life with medication. 

July 15 

Forged Bills at Starbucks

A customer ordering coffee at allegedly passed a forged $20 bill to pay for his purchase at 12:27 p.m. 

QFC Purse-Snatcher Hits Shopper in Town Center

A white adult male allegedly snatched a 68-year-old resident's purse from the child seat of her shopping cart at the at around 2:40 p.m. The suspect was seen leaving the grocery store from the northwest entrance.

Hacker Steals $40,000 From Local Woman's Bank Account

A 57-year-old resident of a home on the 8000 block of SE 57th Street reported at 5:30 p.m. an unknown suspect had hacked into her email account and transferred $40,000 to an account in Australia sometime between July 4 - 6. The woman said she believed her email account may have been hacked into from an email cafe in Italy that she recently visited while traveling abroad. 

July 16

Senior Resident Flashed by Latino Man

A 75-year-old resident of a home on the 8000 block of SE 33rd Place reported an unknown hispanic adult male exposed his penis to her while he was in her back patio area at around 8:15 a.m.

Islander Boater Busted Again for Underage Drinking

A Mercer Island Marine Patrol boat stopped a Sea Ray motorboat at 1:40 p.m. for carrying a passenger in "an unsafe manner". Officers observed alcoholic beverages and detected the odor of alcohol on all the of the vessel's occupants and discovered all three of them were minors. Portable breathalyzer tests indicated their blood-alcohol levels were below the legal limit, however all three were cited for underage drinking. two weeks ago on Independence Day. 

Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in East Mercer Crash

A Renton man riding a Honda VFR 800 motorcycle misjudged the curve in the 6500 block of East Mercer Way and crashed at 5:25 p.m., flipping his motorcycle in the soft shoulder of the roadway. The 37-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was not wearing a helmet. Police took custody of a registered handgun as medics prepared him for transport. He was transported to Overlake Hospital and treated for back trauma and a fractured ankle.

Maillbox Bombers Continue Spree

Residents of a home on the 4600 block of 91st Avenue SE told police unknown suspects used fireworks to damage their mailbox an mail inside at 11:15 p.m.
