Police Blotter: Internet Romance Turns Sour in Alleged $19,000 Theft

The following information from June 1-6 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A 35-year-old woman contacted Mercer Island Police June 2 to report jewelry worth an estimated $19,000 was stolen from her home on the 7600 block of SE 27th Street. The victim — who filed the report at 3:44 a.m. — said an "acquaintance" she met on the Internet visited her several times and she alleged the man took her personal belongings during one of his stays on April 23. The stolen items include a yellow gold wedding ring and necklace, each encrusted with several diamonds, and a set of white gold earrings and a ring embedded with sapphires and diamonds. The victim said she believed the man is a resident of either California or Illinois.

June 3

Motor Boat Cut Loose 

A 78-year-old resident of a lakeside home on the 5400 block of East Mercer Way reported his 20-foot Bayliner motor boat was allegedly set adrift June 3 from a boat lift moorage sometime after he secured the vessel at around 1:30 p.m. on June 2. The man said he believed a Bellevue man intentionally removed the boat from the lift, but the man was not named as a suspect in the case. The boat's hull suffered extensive damage from striking objects in the water while adrift.

Scofflaw Nabbed under I-90 Bridge 

Police arrested a 23-year-old Kirkland woman parked on the 2300 block of 60th Avenue SE after a registration check of her Honda Civic revealed arrest warrants for thefts in Mountlake Terrace. She was taken to Bothell and transferred to Mountlake Terrace police custody.

Pranksters Cause MercyVet Bench to Collapse

A 49-year-old woman sitting on a bench June 3 in front MercyVet's offices on 76th Avenue SE was allegedly the victim of mischief-makers as the seat collapsed under her weight. A close inspection of the bench revealed someone had removed the nuts and bolts from the bench seat area. Apart from the likely shock from the collapsing bench, the woman was unharmed and the bench — apart from the missing nuts and bolts — suffered minimal damage.

June 5

Teen Driver Falls Asleep at the Wheel in 60th Ave. SE Crash

An 18-year-old resident driving northbound on 60th Ave. SE at 7:15 a.m. on June 5 fell asleep and ran the side of the Volkswagen Jetta into a rock wall and landscaping of a home on the 2200 block, nearly flipping over the car. The car then spun around and again collided with the rock wall on the passenger side of the vehicle until coming to a stop. The car was heavily damaged and the teenager was transported to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue with a deep cut on his nose. He was later cited by police for inattentive driving.

Man Attempts Drug Overdose in Domestic Arguement

Mercer Island Firefighter EMTs transported a 50-year-old resident to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue June 5 after he allegedly tried to overdose on an unknown medication following a domestic argument. The man was semi-conscious when the ambulance arrived at 1:30 p.m. and said he was trying to hurt himself.

June 6

Cyclist Wipeout on West Mercer Way

A 40-year-old Renton cyclist riding southbound on the 2800 block of West Mercer Way at 9 a.m. crashed after reaching for his water bottle and losing control of his bicycle. The man suffered minor injuries to his face and a cracked tooth as a result of hitting the pavement face-first. The man declined medical treatment and was transported to his home via an ambulance.
