Police Blotter: Man Arrested in Attack of Elderly Man at Northwest Yeshiva High

(Police Blotter April 5-7) Police took a 47-year-old local resident into custody on suspicion that he likely attacked an 84 year-old man waiting in his car at Northwest Yeshiva High School.

Update (April 8, 9:30 p.m.): The 47-year-old suspect in an April 5 first-degree robbery case at  had an initial court appearance today where probable cause was found to hold the Mercer Island resident.

The judge set bail at $500,000. The hearing today gave the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office time to review the case and a decision is expected by Tuesday, April 12.

"Our office will be looking to file charges by the deadline to keep him in custody," said King County Prosecuting Attorney spokesperson Ian Goodhew.

Prosecutors and Mercer Island Police say the suspect has a long criminal history of felony drug and property crime convictions, but nothing similar in the degree of violence. Mercer Island Detective Peter Erickson said the alleged attack on the 84-year-old Seattle man was not typical of the man's prior behavior.

"I think it was a totally random thing," he said.

(April 5, 3:30 p.m.):  arrested a local man Thursday for allegedly attempting to rob an 84-year-old man in broad daylight April 5 in the parking lot of.

According to a police summary of the incident, the victim was waiting inside his car in the parking lot at around 3:30 p.m. just before the end of the school day when a 47-year old suspect "grabbed and pulled" the man from his car. The man allegedly grabbed the victim by the shoulders and reached into his shirt pockets, then dropped the elderly man to the ground, causing a laceration just above his right eye. 

The suspect fled the parking lot as high school students exited the building, including an 18-year-old male student who witnessed the alleged incident. Police were notified of the incident at 3:44 p.m.

Mercer Island Patch is withholding the name of the suspect pending charges from County Prosecutors.

Tuesday, April 5

(Burglary) Unknown suspects reportedly broke into a home on the 7600 block of West Mercer Way between 12 - 2:30 p.m. Police believed the suspects entered the residence by smashing a rear glass door and took several computers, televisions and a Sony Playstation. The homeowner, 52, estimated losses at $5,000.

(Harassment) A Seattle woman working at a business in Mercer Island Town Center reported she was receiving harassing calls from the ex-wife of her current boyfriend. She said she feared both the ex-wife and the ex-wife's boyfriend were conspiring to harm her and upset her pregnancy.

(Theft) The resident of an apartment on the 3200 block of West Concord Way reported his gray Kona King Kikapu bicycle was stolen from a storage bike rack. The victim, 24, went to retrace the bicycle and discovered it missing at around 6:50 p.m.

Wednesday, April 6

(Found Property) The manager of the Mary Wayte Pool contacted police at 12:35 p.m. about a discarded CMM mountain bike he discovered in the bushes several weeks ago. He said no one had claimed it and he wanted to turn it over to police.

(Warrant Arrest) Police arrested a Sammamish man, 33, working at a business on the 7600 block of 27th Street after he failed to appear in court on Tuesday, April 4. He was taken to the Issaquah Jail and booked.

(Informational Report) An Aljoya resident, 91, was walking on the sidewalk directly in front of her home when she reportedly "got tired" and fell down, causing a split lip and a reddish swelling around her right eye.

Thursday, April 7

(DUI) A 26-year old woman was stopped for allegedly driving 50 miles-per-hour on SE 40th Street when police pulled her over at 2:07 a.m. She admitted to drinking but refused to participate in a field sobriety test and was arrested. She later registered above the legal limit on a breathalyzer test and her vehicle was towed.
