Police Blotter: Man Took 'Indecent Liberties' With Female Care Center Resident

The following information from July 17-25 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A 67-year-old resident of the reported July 22 that a man took indecent liberties with her as she tried to sleep in her room sometime on June 1. 

The woman said a naked man got into her bed while she slept and climbed on top her. She said she yelled at him and he got off and he left the room. The man was identified in the report, but Mercer Island Patch does not identify suspects in a case without charge.

Police documented the allegation in an informational report.

July 17

Wild Crash on West Mercer Way

A 77-year-old Redmond man driving a Toyota Camry attempted to turn around in a narrow driveway on the 2000 block of West Mercer Way, but mixed up the gas and brake pedals, causing the loss of control of the vehicle at around 11:30 a.m. The vehicle careened out-of-control around an automatic driveway gate and down into the hillside brush, running over a light fixture and finally coming to a rest after high centering the car on a large boulder in front of the residence.

July 18

Bombed Mailbox

The resident of a home in the Lakes neighborhood on the 7700 block of 81st Place SE reported someone had likely planted fireworks in her locked mailbox, damaging it. An orange residue was left behind on the interior of the mailbox.

Bike Thieves Break-in 

The resident of a home on the 2400 block of 71st Avenue SE reported a children's size red Trek and a Specialized gray "Rockhopper" adult bicycle stolen from his car port sometime between 5 - 7:30 p.m. The Specialized was later found abandoned on the front yard of the residence.

Contractors Run Over Wet Foundation

The owner of a home under construction on the 7200 block of West Ridge Road reported the foundation of his home suffered significant damage at 8 p.m. after someone had driven a small Bobcat tractor over a freshly-poured cement foundation, scarring the concrete and chipping or cracking the base lumber. No damage estimate was given.

July 19

Graffiti Authors Leave Messages in Mens Bathroom

City parks employees reported someone had sprayed graffiti on the interior of a bathroom stall in the men's restroom at sometime overnight after 3 p.m. Monday. Total damages were estimated at $250.

Brother's Fist Fight Lands One in Jail

An 18-year-old Seattle man arrived at his parents house on the 3800 block of 81st Avenue SE to pick up a debit card when he was confronted by his brother over several missing items. The man punched his brother on the back of his neck and bit him, causing minor injuries. The man was arrested for assault and battery and booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Local Youths Caught Drinking at Groveland Beach

Police responded to a call regarding four male teenagers peering into the windows of homes on the 5700 block of 80th Avenue SE near at 11:43 p.m. Officers identified the suspects at the end of the beach dock after hearing them talking about alcohol and noises consistent with opening pressurized beverage cans. Two of the teens tested positive on a portable breathalyzer test for alcohol and police discovered and confiscated a cooler containing a 1.75 liter of vodka and cans of Coors Light and Bud Light beer. All four were cited for underage drinking.

July 20

Car Tabs Thief Arrested

Police arrested a 24-year-old resident driving a black Lexus ES300 on the 3500 block of East Mercer Way after they discovered he was driving without a valid license. Officers first noticed his car registration tabs did not match his registration, which had expired. 

Local Woman Victim of Credit Card Fraud on Internet

A 53-year-old resident of a home on the 4300 block of 86th Avenue SE reported unknown suspects had fraudulently made several charges on the Internet using her Capital One credit card account. The charges occurred from July 15, noon to 4pm July 20. The woman was able to cancel several pending charges and Capital One agreed to refund the woman the remaining amount for the fraudulent purchases.

July 21

Woman Seeks to Re-open Murder Investigation

A 57-year-old Renton woman contacted police about an old murder investigation involving a 74-year-old possibly residing on Mercer Island.

Woman Arrested in Domestic Violence Episode

Police responding to a domestic violence call on the 3000 block of 81st Place SE arrived to find a 29-year-old woman with a bloody fat lip claiming that her husband had assaulted her at 11:445 p.m. The husband said his wife assaulted him in the bedroom and had to shield his 2-year-old son while she attacked him. Police found the husband's explanation of the event and injuries more credible and arrested the woman on suspicion of assault and battery. She was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

July 22

Mailbox Thief Nabs Check

The resident of a home on the 2800 block of 68th Avenue SE said a black adult male wearing a white visor cap reached inside her mailbox at 6 a.m. and removed an envelope containing a personal check. The man then left the scene in a red compact car.

July 23 

Shampoo Shoplifter Caught

Police arrested a 30-year-old resident for shoplifting at 12:30 a.m. after he tried to leave with several bottles of red wine and shampoo. An unknown suspect had tried to leave the store about an hour earlier with about $50-worth of shampoo in a blue Ford pick-up truck.

Busted Window Vandal at Community Center

A 56-year-old Bellevue woman visiting the reported the passenger side window of her Toyota Corolla at 5:06 p.m. Nothing was taken from inside the vehicle.

July 24

Found Keys

A good Samaritan turned in a set of keys with a "Guatemala" keyring banner and an Albertsons Preferred Customer card attached, found at the . Police have thus far been unable to locate the key's owner.

MIPD Busts Local Man, Canadian Woman for DUI

Police arrested a 28-year-old resident on suspicion of drunk driving on the 2600 block of 76th Avenue SE at 12:29 a.m. Officers first noticed the Chevy Blazer he was driving had expired registration tabs and pulled him over. He admitted that he "probably drank more than he should have considering he was driving." He failed several field sobriety tests but his blood alcohol content was later measured below the legal limit. Police later arrested a 26-year-old Canadian woman on westbound Interstate 90 at 2:59 a.m. on suspicion of drunk driving. Police initially stopped the Vancouver, B.C. resident for speeding, failing to stop at a stop sign and improper lane usage on Mercer Island as she entered the Interstate. The woman smelled of alcohol and provided a portable breathalyzer test above the legal limit. Her Honda Civic was towed and she was later released to a sober friend.

July 25

New Yorker's Wallet Found

Two local residents discovered a wallet of a Watertown, New York man on the 7400 block of North Mercer Way at 6 a.m. The wallet contained U.S. Military ID, a drivers license, a credit card and other forms of ID.

Police Break-in, Resident's OK

Asked to check on the welfare of a 59-year-old man at 6:42 a.m., police were unable to contact the man — thought to be suicidal — and broke into the residence. They discovered him inside unharmed.

Credit Card Fraud

A 30-year-old resident of a home on the 3200 block of 81st Place SE reported an unauthorized charge on her credit card of $314.25. She said the charge occurred sometime on July 19.
