Police Blotter: Marijuana Patient Arrested for Possession in Traffic Stop

The following information from May 28-19 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

An 18-year-old Mountlake Terrace teenager holding a copy of a doctor's medical marijuana prescription was arrested May 28 on suspicion of illegal drug possession as police responded to a series of 911 calls pinpointed to his car.

Multiple 911 calls were traced to a cell phone in the area of 77th Avenue SE and SE 27th Street in the Town Center area at 7:49 p.m. Officers noticed a black Honda Prelude stopped in a lane of traffic at the corner of 78th Avenue SE and SE 28th Street.

The driver of the car "was very agitated", and a 17-year-old Mercer Island teenage girl in the passenger seat "appeared to have been crying". Police conducted a search and discovered a small quantity of marijuana and a photocopy of a medical marijuana doctor's prescription, and arrested the driver.

The couple later admitted making the 911 calls but they said their dispute was verbal only. The Mountlake Terrace teen was cited for misdemeanor drug possession and later released.

Elderly Woman Crashes into South-end Rite Aid
An 87-year old resident parked her Lexus RX300 in front of the South-end said she was attempting to leave when she accidentally stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brakes, crashing through the exterior wall of the store at 12:40 p.m. and damaging the car. The Rite Aid store manager said the crash caused a number of makeup products to fall into the aisle and there was also minor damage to the interior of the store. The airbag in the car deployed, the woman was uninjured and police issued no citation.

May 20

Hunting For Parking Spot, Finding an Accident
A 62-year-old resident was driving an Acura MDX east through the South-end parking lot and stopped at the stop sign between and when he reversed his vehicle and crashed into a Volvo 850 which began backing out behind him, causing damage to both vehicles. The man said he was trying to reach a parking spot he had seen as he stopped, and was cited for unsafe backing. No injuries were reported.

May 21

Graffiti Vandals hit West Mercer Again
Several cement posts and a window frame at were vandalized with graffiti over the weekend and reported to police at around 8 a.m. The graffiti was written in black and gold pen, and the total cost to repair the damage was estimated at $150. No suspect information was available.

Man Clips Woman With Wing Mirror at Island Park
A 42-year-old woman was reportedly struck by the wing mirror of a vehicle driven by her ex-husband in the parking lot as he drove away at 12:50 p.m. Police found no obvious sign of injury and no evidence of intentional assault.

Old Truck Towed From SE 67th Street
Police towed and impounded a 1981 black Ford heavy truck belonging to a Seattle man after it was parked on the 8000 block of SE 67th Street for over 3 days.

May 22

Spin-out From Flat Tire on West Mercer Way
A 50-year-old Seattle man driving a Ford Rio pickup truck attempted to turn left off of West Mercer Way and on to Interstate 90 eastbound when he spun out, driving over the curb at and running over a Metro bus stop sign. The man said he suspected his front tire blew out as he began turning the truck, causing the accident. No citation was issued.

Man 'Flips the Bird', Violates Restraining Order
A Kirkland man was cited for violating a restraining order after he "flipped off" a 34-year-old Bellevue woman from his Jeep Cherokee on the 3900 block of Island Crest Way at around 7:40 a.m. The order restrains the man from coming within 500 feet of the woman or communicating with her.

Madrona Crest Home Raided by Burglars
A 46-year-old woman reported her home in the Madrona Crest neighborhood was burglarized and a number of valuables, including computers and jewelry, were missing. The home on the 8400 block of SE 37th Street was broken into sometime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. She said the burglars had stolen an iPad and two Apple Mac Book Pro computers and an unknown type and quantity of jewelry was stolen.

Drug Bag Dump Near MIHS Under Investigation
Police are investigating a discarded red duffel bag containing drugs and glass bongs/smoking pipes that was hidden in residential yard in a neighborhood near . The resident of a home on the 4200 block of 91st Avenue SE reported a white Land Rover stopped in front of her residence at around 8:30 a.m. and saw two teenage boys get out and attempt to hide a red duffel bag in the bushes, then left. The woman discovered the bag and its contents, which included an unnamed quantity of marijuana. The vehicle's license plates matched those of one owned by an East Seattle neighborhood resident on the 6700 block of SE 28th Street.

Tarywood Couple Victims of Identity Fraud
Residents of a home on the 7200 block of 92nd Avenue SE discoveres a number of fraudulent credit cards had been ordered in their name with a new address a few days after they completed the refinancing of their home mortgage. The suspects have repeatedly tried to open new accounts and transfer their money into those accounts.

Man Violates Restraining Order Again
A Bellevue woman picking up her children from a daycare facility on the 4000 block of 86th Ave SE at 5:55 p.m. noticed a man under a restraining order standing on the sidewalk nearby and they "looked at each other eye to eye". The order restrains the man from knowingly passing within 500 feet of her, and this is second day in a row the man is in violation of the court order.

May 24

Woman Arrested Driving Without a License on I-90
A State Trooper arrested a 43-year-old resident traveling on Interstate 90 for driving on a suspended license and also discovered a warrant for driving on a suspended license had been issued for Mercer Island.

Stolen Backpacks, Lunch Bag Found at Mercer Island Park & Ride Parking Lot
Three bags were found at the upper level of the — two backpacks containing several documents that belonged to the owners, and an insulated lunch bag with tupperware containers inside. Two Coworkers of the victims said the bags had been missing since the owners were victims in car prowl incidents.

May 25

Man Reports Bicycle Burglary — Three Months Late
A resident of a home on the 3400 block of West Mercer Way said his blue Santa Cruz bicycle was stolen from his garage overnight on Feb. 10, but failed to report it because he thought he would have recovered it by now.

Drunk Redmond Woman Arrested in Parked Car
A 28-year-old Redmond woman was contacted by police at 10:46 p.m. while parked inside a white Honda Civic on the 7800 block of SE 28th Street. The woman was heavily intoxicated and failed several sobriety tests. A breathalyzer test later indicated her blood-alcohol levels were .119, above the legal limit. She was arrested and her vehicle towed from the scene and impounded.

Burglars Steal Medication From SE 59th Street Home
Residents of a home on the 8200 block of SE 59th Street reported a bottle of Diazepam (valium) missing from their medicine cabinet and suspected burglars had entered the home while they were away from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The laundry room door was found to be ajar.

Cash Found on Town Center Sidewalk
An 80-year-old resident discovered an undisclosed amount of cash on the ground on the 7700 block of SE 27th Street, and turned it in to the police at around 1 p.m.

May 27

Passed-Out Teen Found on East Seattle Roadside
Police discovered an 18-year-old Renton teenager passed out on the roadside of the 2400 block of 60th Avenue Southeast, where a large party was occurring nearby. A portable breathalyzer test indicated blood-alcohol levels at .206/.213. His mother was out of town, so he was later picked up from the by an adult cousin and was cited for underage drinking.
