(Updated) Police Blotter: Mercer Island Car Windows Smashed in June 26 Rock-Throwing Spree

The following information from June 24 - 26 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Rock-throwing vandals smashed several car windows in the Madrona Crest neighborhood during a Tuesday evening crime spree, according to .

Residents reported the June 26 malicious mischief incidents in four separate calls between 8 p.m. and midnight along 84th and 86th Avenue Southeast.

The owners of an Acura MDX and a Mazda Protege parked on the 3700 block of 86th Avenue SE were the first to call police when they disocvered their vehicles had been damaged by thrown rocks. The Acura had its drivers side rear window shattered and body damage, with losses estimated at $500 and the Mazda had its rear window smashed, with total losses of $300. A Toyota Tundra parked nearby on the 3600 block of 86th Avenue SE also had its rear window and windshield smashed and the truck's dashboard damaged.

Further along on the 3300 block of 84th Avenue SE, a Subaru Outback Sport was reported damaged by a rock sometime between 10:15-10:30 p.m. The back right window and frame were dented by the vandalism, with damages estimated at $500.

June 24

College Student Drives Off With Money on Car Roof
A 24-year-old Redmond woman accidentally left her black wallet on top of her vehicle as she was filling her tank at the gas station and drove off at around 4:35 p.m. She reported the wallet, including 3 debit cards, 2 credit cards and a school ID, lost and cancelled the cards. Shell employees were unable to find the wallet.

Stepmother Could Face Charges for Assaulting Daughter
A 19-year-old woman was injured after she got into an argument with her stepmother at 10:45 p.m. inside a residence on the 3900 block of 90th Avenue SE. The teenager was arguing with her father and the stepmother when the 40-year-old woman and teen began calling each other names and the stepmother grabbed her from behind the neck an pulled her hair. Police found scratches to her neck and legs. The assault and battery case was referred to a prosecutor for review.

June 25

Arson at Mary Wayte Pool
Burned women's clothing and buttons were found around 6:39 a.m. in an ash heap in an exterior alcove of that was set alight sometime overnight. Police also found cigarette butts and condom wrappers nearby. No suspect information was available.

Police Investigate Hit-and-Run at South-End QFC
A light-colored, mid-size SUV backing out of a parking space near the in the sideswiped the rear bumper of a brand-new Acura sedan at around 11:20 a.m. A witness was unable to get a good look at the hit-and-run driver as the SUV sped off.

Troubled Teen Arrested on Warrant, Drug Charges
Police arrested a 17-year-old resident on misdemeanor warrants at 2:34 p.m. in a residence on the 3400 block of 72nd Avenue SE. Police familiar with the teen from previous incidents cited him for drug possession upon his arrest as they searched him and discovered a marijuana smoking pipe in his possession

Albertsons Wine Thief Caught Red-Handed
After dumping over $100 in stolen wine from in the bushes, police arrested a 39-year-old Seattle man at the for shoplifting at 11:15 p.m. An Albertsons store employees caught him shoplifting the wine and confronted him at 10:51 when he fled the store. The man admitted stealing the wine and said he had stolen wine from there several times before. Total value of the wine stolen was valued at $136.90

June 26

Car Accident at Covenant Shores
An 80-year-old resident was attempting to park at her home on the 9100 block of Fortuna Drive and was following a Nissan Murano when that vehicle suddenly stopped and reversed into her Honda Accord at 11:30 a.m., causing minor damage. The accident victim said she was unable to avoid the reversing Nissan. Police later located the Nissan and found no damage, but were unable to locate the driver. 

Burglars Strike Elderly Woman's Town Center Condo 
An 89-year-old woman contacted police at 5:25 p.m. reported her condominium on the 2700 block of 76th Avenue SE had been burglarized while she was away between June 19-26. The elderly woman said she leaves the door to her condo unlocked and reported a laptop computer, a pair of diamond earrings, a silk and a wool scarf were all stolen from her bedroom.

Drug Bust on Franklin Landing
Police broke up a drug deal on and arrested an 18-year-old resident for marijuana possession. Four Mercer Island teens found on the 4100 block of Boulevard Place gathered near a Volvo 740 and were detained and searched. Officers located a bag containing marijuana and a smoking pipe inside the sweatshirt pocket of the Volvo owner. The two 17-year-olds and 19-year-old males were released and the 18-year old was arrested and later released.

(Ed. Note: Mercer Island Police corrected the address on one of the rock damaged car malicious mischief incidents. All of the incidents occurred in the same North-end neighborhood.)

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
