Police Blotter: Sporting Burglars Seize Tennis Racquets and Golf Clubs

The following information from June 20-22 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Burglars on the hunt for sporting equipment in the Parkwood neighborhood allegedly raided the residential garage of a home on the 5600 block of 90th Avenue SE in the early morning hours of June 16. 

The homeowners told police the garage and a car inside — aToyota Prius — were likely unlocked and rifled through. Sporting equipment was taken from inside the garage, including a red/black vinyl Wilson-brand tennis bag containing 4 tennis racquets and a Babolat tennis racquet in a separate bag. 

Police believe the break-in is related to from the same day reported earlier in the week on the 5400 block of 91st Avenue. In that burglary, thieves picked up a set of golf clubs from a garage valued at $1,000.

Vandals Offer Driving Critique in Graffiti

A 45-year-old resident of a home on the 3600 block of 73rd Avenue SE reported someone had vandalized her Volkswagen Jetta with a black marker sometime over night. The car, used by the woman and her 21-year-old daughter was defaced with the marker expressing their displeasure in the driver's driving.

Patrol Tows Conspicuous Volkswagen

Police towed a black 2007 Volkswagen Passat, registered to a 21-year-old Bellevue resident, after it was parked on the 6600 block of SE 25th Street for over 72 hours and it was declared abandoned. The car, which seemed conspicuous in it's location parked on the side of the narrow roadway, was tagged with a warning on June 15.

Owner Puzzles as Passport Takes Flight

A 42-year-old resident of a home on the 7400 block of West Mercer Way reported to police at 10:39 a.m. that she had misplaced her United States passport sometime this month but wasn't sure exactly where or when she lost it. 

Drunk Driver Arrested on West Mercer Way

A night-time traffic stop for moving violations resulted in the arrest of a 44 year-old resident door drunk driving. Police pulled over a black Audi 80 sedan on the 3400 block of West Mercer Way at 9:24 p.m. and determined the man's breath smelled of alcohol and had been drinking. His blood-alcohol levels were later measured at twice the legal limit and he was arrested.

June 21

Teen Driver Injures Senior in Forest Ave. Car Accident

A Jeep Cherokee traveling southbound on the 5200 block of Forest Avenue was blindsided by a Toyota Prius pulling out from a driveway without yielding to her. The crash resulted in damage to the Jeep's left corner and front and caused the 72-year-old local woman back pain. The 19-year-old teenage woman driving the Toyota was unharmed and was cited for failure to yield.

June 22

Prowlers Dump Car Emergency Kit

Police discovered a small black Samsonite luggage case at 8:09 a.m. in the middle of 92nd Avenue SE on the 4000 block. The case — a car emergency kit — contains a set of jumper cables, flares, a flashlight and a fix-a-flat and screwdriver kit. The abandoned case is .

Hired Gardener Discovers Needle Stash

A gardener working at a home on the 7700 block of 76th Avenue SE discovered a plastic bag containing unused syringes and small bundles of foil and turned them over to the home owner, who contacted police at 3:16 p.m. Police detected no drugs inside the bag. The contents were safely disposed of by police.
