Police Blotter: Teen Booze Beach Party Bust at Groveland Park

The following information from July 2 - July 10 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The teens were cited for illegal alcohol possession as a minor after police found the group at 11:43 p.m. with a backpack filled with alcoholic beverages. As police approached the local teens, ages 16-18, they were overheard talking about who owed who for beer and how they were wanting to get drunk. Police confiscated approximately one case of Coors Light.

Police contacted the parents of the teenagers under 18 and all were released from the scene.

July 2

Local Burglar, 18, Caught After Raiding Home
A home on the 8400 block of 33rd Place SE was burglarized at 1-1:30 p.m. A neighbor said she saw the burglar entering the victim's backyard and leaving 30 minutes later with two shopping bags. Two bottles of Bacardi run, two Cartier watches and a digital Nikon camera were reported stolen and valued at $10,000. Police later arrested an 18-year-old resident on suspicion of first-degree theft.

16-Year-Old To Blame in Starbucks Crash
A black BMW sedan trying to exit the parking lot on SE 27th Street collided with a black BMW SUV, causing minor injuries to a 5-year-old passenger inside. The 16-year-old girl driving the sedan said she didn't see the SUV as she tried to make a left turnout SE 27th Street. She was cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

July 3

Hungry Woman Arrested For Shoplifting at South-end QFC
Police arrested a 21-year-old Bellevue woman for stealing food from the and left the scene in a truck with three other individualis at 3:41 p.m. The red Dodge Dakota she was driving was stopped by MIPD officers on the 8400 block of SE 68th Street, and the woman admitted to shoplifting a deli bag of chicken wings and a bowl of macaroni and cheese. The woman was transported to the MIPD, then cited and released.

July 4

Fireworks Blow-Up More Mailboxes
Two mailboxes were blown up sometime overnight by fireworks. Two incidents were reported from the 9200 block of SE 60th Street and the 7000 block of Maker Street. The black, metal locking mailbox on Maker Street would cost an estimated $200.

Smoke Grenade Arson at El Dorado Firs Home
A smoke bomb grenade was ignited on an elderly woman's porch at 1:29 p.m. on the 8800 block of 61st Street, causing minor damage and scorching to the siding. The suspect reportedly ran up to the porch, rang the bell and then fled before the firework exploded.

Drug Overdose Believed an Attempted Suicide
A local man was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle at 1 a.m. after he had overdosed on drugs in his home on the 2800 block of 60th Avenue Southeast. Police said they had responded to the residence to investigate reports of domestic violence when the 24-year-old man was found. He was detained in the hospital for his own safety after s determined he had attempted to commit suicide.

July 5

Car Prowlers Hit Vehicles on South-End
Two cars were prowled overnight on the South-end, with the passenger-side window shattered and paperwork was stolen from the vehicle. A Mercedes-Benz 230 was broken into on the 8400 block of Benotho Place and an Audi A4 was prowled while it was parked on East Mercer Way near Clarke Beach Park. Total damages for the Audi were estimated at $257.

Car Prowl at Luther Burbank Park
A Yukon GM truck owned by a 28-year-old Nooksack woman was prowled while parked at the north parking lot at . The prowler got inside the vehicle sometime around 2-3:30 p.m. by breaking the passenger front door window. The woman's Coach brand purse was stolen from on top of the center console, and contained several credit cards and an unspecified amount of cash.

Skateboarder Cuts Hand at Mercerdale Park
A skateboarder was taken to the hospital after she fell and cut her hand in at 4:21 p.m. The 18-year-old girl was holding a glass of water as she skated and when she fell the glass broke, cutting her hand. She was treated on the scene by Mercer Island Firefighter EMTs and taken to the hospital by a friend for further care.

July 6

Drunk Driver Arrested in Town Center
A police patrol arrested a 23-year-old Seatac man for drunk driving on the 3000 block of 80th Avenue SE at 2:27 a.m. after he was stopped for a registration check. The owner of the white Acura TL had a suspended license, but police found his brother at the wheel. The smell of alcohol and an open bottle of Crown Royal whisky on the car's floor, however, let police to suspect the man was intoxicated. He provided breathalyzer readings of .194 and .193 — twice the legal limit. He was arrested and the car was towed.

Key Chain Found at Clarke Beach
A good Samaritan turned in a "University Prep Alumni" keychain and a set of four keys on it to the Mercer Island Police Department that he found at at 2:33 p.m.

July 7

Home, Truck Egged Overnight by Vandals
The home and a new truck of a resident on the 7400 block of East Mercer Way was egged overnight, causing small scratching on the truck's paint.

Beef Steak Thief Arrested for Shoplifting
Caught stealing $88-worth of steaks, deli chicken and dryer sheets, police arrested a 27-year-old Seattle man on suspicion of shoplifting from the . The man was caught by the store manager as he attempted to leave the store at 11:30 a.m., and was later booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Mercer Apts. Chops Down Street Tree
An employee of allegedly cut down a tree along the sidewalk on the 2600 block of 77th Ave. SE at around 12:35 p.m. Police documented the incident for future reference.

July 9

Renton Traffic Scofflaw Arrested
Police took custody of a Renton man, 20, wanted on a local warrant for driving without a license and/or valid photo ID.

Boat, Reported Stolen, Found in Seattle
A Zodiac Yachtline motorboat was reported stolen at 4:26 p.m. when it was discovered missing from its moorings from a residential dock of a home on Holly Hill Drive. The boat was later found in good condition near Seattle on July 11.

July 10

Girl's Purse Stolen in Luther Burbank Park
A 13-year-old Bellevue girl said she lost a small, white zip purse while visiting Luther Burbank Park July 9 between 5-6 pm. She left the purse on a fence post in the park's dog run area and returned later to find it missing. An undisclosed amount of cash was inside the purse.

Cash, Credit Cards Stolen at Mercer Island Beach Club
A undisclosed amount of cash, credit cards and ID were stolen from a wallet between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. which was left unattended in a gym at . The 17-year-old victim, an employee of the club, noticed the theft when he tried to buy something and discovered the wallet had been emptied of its contents.

Suspected Abuser Arrested for Violating Restraining Order
A 25-year-old Bellevue man was arrested at 8:15 p.m. after he violated a domestic violence restraining order by trying to visit the woman he was forbidden to contact. He was arrested and booked into the Issaquah Jail.
