Police Blotter: Vandals Pop Car Tires at MIHS

The following information from Jan. 17 - Jan. 29 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Police are investigating reports of vandalized car tires at , flattened by road tacks.

report three vehicles parked in the high school parking lot on Jan. 24 were deliberately targeted by unknown suspects during school hours.

All three of the victims are teacher assistants and help the high school enforce parking restrictions there by issuing parking citations.

One of the victims, a 16-year-old MIHS student, found a road tack stuck into the rear passenger-side tire of the Mercedes-Benz C300 he drove to school, causing it to go flat. The damage to the vehicle is estimated at $250.

Plumbers Repair Pipes, Then Damage Neighbor's SUV

Two employees of Southwest Plumbing attempted to leave a residence on the 4800 block of Forest Avenue SE when the Isuzu NR300 truck they were driving backed into a white Acura SUV parked nearby, causing damage. According to several witnesses, the two men left the truck to look at the vehicle β€” which they claimed was already dented. Police investigation later revealed that the driver, a 39-year-old Seatac man, had several unpaid tickets and a suspended license. He was cited for driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident.

Graffiti Vandals Hit Key Bank

Building owners of reported painted graffiti on the side of the building at 11:56 a.m. The graffiti appears to spell "IGOT1".

Jan. 25

Spray-paint Graffiti Found at Thrift Shop, Devington Condominiums

Both the and Devington Condominiums on the 7600 block of SE 29th Street were vandalized with spray-painted graffiti on the exterior walls of the buildings. The graffiti occurred sometime overnight between 5 p.m. the previous evening and 7:30 a.m. Vandals spray-painted the west side of the apartment building and a fence and sprayed the words "OPAY JOE!" and "41NORISK" on the Thrift Store.

Lunar New Year Fireworks Found at IMS

Islander Middle School staff located a Roman cannel firework on the back parking lot adjacent to the South Mercer Playfields. Police took possession of the firework for destruction.

Jan. 26

Child Abuse Alleged in Mercerwood

A 36-year-old Snohomish man reported his two sons were physically abused by their mother's boyfriend on Jan. 25 at her home on the 4000 block of 92nd Avenue SE. The 5- and 7-year-old boys said the man "hit him and his brother (name redacted) in the head with a shoe." The father provided police with a photo indicating one of his sons had a long bruise in the middle of his forehead. Child Protective Services were notified of the incident.

Jan. 27

Local Man Kicked Out of Community Center

Police removed a 59-year-old man from the at 11:09 a.m. and issued a No Trespass Order for violating the center's code of conduct, banning him from the premises for one year. The man left the center without incident.

Death Investigation

Police are investigating the death of an 86-year-old woman, found in the shower of her room at . She was discovered by staff conducting a bed check at 11 a.m., and had not been seen since 9:45 a.m. the previous day. Investigators report no signs of suspicious activity.

Vehicle Break-in at Luther Burbank Park

A woman visiting reported her Ford Escape was prowled sometime between 3-3:45 p.m. The suspect broke the driver's side door window and took the woman's wallet from the front driver's seat, containing an unidentified amount of cash.

Heroin Overdose Sends Man to Hospital

revived a 22-year-old man at 8:45 p.m. in his home on the 2900 block of 76th Avenue SE after he had overdosed on heroin. Investigators recovered a partial amount of heroin left in a spoon that the man admitted to using and police arrested him for drug possession. He was later transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Police arrest 75-year-old man for DUI

A 75-year-old Bellevue man was arrested for driving under the influence after police stopped him on the 2700 block of 80th Avenue SE for a traffic violation. His vehicle, a BMW X5, was impounded by and he was later released to his wife at the Mercer Island Police Department.

Jan. 28

Police Discover Beer Bong, Alcohol Abandoned in Street

Patrol officers checking the 9200 block of SE 36th Place for signs of a possible underage drinking party discovered a beer bong, beer, a half-full bottle of coconut rum and four one dollar bills left abandoned in the street.

Jan. 29

Shorewood Apartment Burglarized

A 38-year-old woman reported her apartment on the 9000 block of West Shorewood Drive was broken into sometime over the past three days. A set of china, a laptop computer and a mini camera were stolen from the residence. Her son's Tony Hawk Sypher BMX bike was also stolen from the apartment complex's parking garage nearby.
