Police Blotter: Traffic Stops Lead to Several Arrests

The following information from Dec. 15 - Dec. 28 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Dec. 15

Trumpet stolen from home

A woman living on Southeast 36th Street contacted police after she discovered that a trumpet that had been kept in the entry area of her home was missing. The trumpet is valued at approximately $1,200.

Teen arrested for marijuana possession after being stopped for broken taillight

Police arrested a 17-year-old Mercer Island boy for possession of marijuana after the vehicle he was ridding in was pulled over on the 3400 Block of 78th Avenue Southeast for a non-functioning taillight at night. After the five occupants of the vehicle all signed consent forms a large amount of marijuana, a pipe, a “gas mask” bong and a digital scale were found in one of the passenger’s backpack. He was arrested, processed and later released to his mother.

Man bites girlfriend's arm

Police arrested a 53-year-old Mercer Island man for assault after he bit his girlfriend’s arm during an argument. The man was arrested and booked into Issaquah Jail.

Wallet, GPS stolen from parked car

A man living on 88th Avenue Southeast contacted police after his car was broken into and a wallet and portable GPS unit were stolen.

Items stolen from multiple cars

Two cars were broken into on 89th Avenue Southeast and a cell phone, CD case with approximately 12 CDs and a briefcase were stolen.

Dec. 22

Purse stolen from unlocked car

A woman living on 74th Avenue Southeast contacted police after her purse was stolen from her unlocked vehicle.

Bicycle stolen from apartment building

A woman living on East Shorewood Drive contacted police after her bicycle was stolen from a storage room at her apartment building. The bicycled had been secured by a heavy cable and lock.

Suspended license leads to DUI arrest

Police arrested a 24-year-old Bellevue man for suspicion of drunk driving after he was pulled over on the 8000 Block of Southeast 28 Street for driving with a suspended license. When police contacted the driver they smelled intoxicants and noticed his slurred speech. He volunteered for field sobriety tests, which he failed, but decline to give a breath sample. He was taken into custody and processed at the , where he later provided a breath sample of .119.

Dec. 23

Busted lights lead to suspended license arrest

Police arrested a 26-year-old Seattle man for driving with a suspended license after he was pulled over on the 7600 Block of North mercer Way for driving with a non-functioning license plate light and taillight at night. A check of the man’s driving record revealed that he had a suspended license. The driver was taken into custody, processed and released. The vehicle was released to a licensed driver.

Dec. 24

Expired tabs lead to DUI arrest

Police arrested a 22-year-old Mercer Island woman on suspicion of drunk driving after she was pulled over for expired tabs on the 2400 Block of 66th Avenue Southeast. When police contacted the driver they immediately smelled intoxicants. She volunteered for field sobriety tests, which she failed, and provided a Breathalyzer sample of .104. The woman was taken into custody and transferred to the Mercer Island Police Station. Her vehicle was impounded, and she was later released to her father.

Wine stolen from parked car

A woman living on 80th Avenue Southeast contacted police after her unlocked vehicle was entered and several bottles of wine were stolen from her trunk.

Dec. 25

Vehicle vandalized in parking garage

A man living on Southeast 29th Street contacted police after an unknown suspect keyed his vehicle while it was parked in his building’s parking garage, causing approximately $1,500 in damage.

Passing motorist steals cell phone

A Bothell man contacted police after a passing motorist stole his cell phone. The man had been on 72nd Avenue Southeast when a man drove up in a red vehicle and asked if he could use his cell phone to call for help because he was running out of gas. The man handed over his phone and the suspect drove away.

Dec. 27

Burglar enters unlocked home, steals iPad

Police were dispatched to a residential burglary on 85th Avenue Southeast after an unknown suspect entered a home through an unlocked door and stole an iPad2 and several pieces of jewelry.

Teen arrested for marijuana possession following traffic stop

Police arrested a 17-year-old Mercer Island boy after he was pulled over for speeding on the 3600 Block of West Mercer Way. When police contacted the driver of the vehicle they smelled marijuana and found a small plastic bag containing leafy plant mater on the center console. The driver admitted the marijuana was his and was arrested and transported to the Mercer Island Police Station, where he was processed and released.

Dec. 28

Man tries to steal condoms, fights with Albertson’s employee

Police arrested an 18-year-old Mercer Island man after he attempted to steal a box of condoms from the on 77th Avenue Southeast. An employee saw the man put the box of condoms in his jacket and confronted him when he attempted to leave the store. The man denied having the condoms and the two briefly scuffled.
