Shoplifter Nabs Nearly $500 in Liquor from North End QFC — Mercer Island Police Blotter

The following information from June 30 - July 8 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Mercer Island Police say an unidentified man pried open the high-end liquor cabinet at the North-end QFC at 11:03 p.m. on Monday, July 8 and stole 10 bottles of alcohol — including Cognac and tequila, valued at $438.90.

There was no damage to the cabinet, and the shoplifting suspect placed the stolen liquor in a canvas backpack and exited the store on foot.

Amorous Drunk Driver Arrested at Jacksons Shell Gas Station
A 27-year-old resident was arrested on suspicion of DUI at 5 a.m. after police stopped her white Cadillac Escalade on the 3000 block of 78th Ave. SE. She solicited sex from a man for stopped by police at the Jacksons Shell Gas Station for an unrelated traffic stop. When officers at the scene recognized her from prior incidents, she climbed into the SUV and drove it around the block before police were able to flag her down and make the arrest. Several people called 911 earlier, beginning at 3:16 a.m., to report the same woman had been drinking and causing a nuisance.

Bike Stolen from Mercer Island Park & Ride
Unknown thieves stole a Giant-brand hybrid bicycle from the Mercer Island Park and Ride over the weekend. No information was provided on how the bicycle was secured. The 18-year-old female owner reported the bicycle stolen at 2 p.m., and valued the stolen bike at $850.

Bike Found at MICEC
Police on patrol discovered a bicycle at the Mercer Island Community Center at 11:57 p.m. The bicycle was tagged and placed in storage at the Mercer Island Police Station.

Senior Citizen Cited for Hit-and-Run at QFC Parking Lot
A Chrysler 300 struck a BMW in the North-end QFC parking lot at 4:10 p.m., as the two cars tried to back out of parking spaces at the same time. The 69-year-old male driver of the Chrysler later refused to identify himself and exchange insurance information with the female driver, and drove away. She followed the car and was able to photograph the suspect vehicle with her phone. The man later denied to police that he refused to exchange insurance information, but police cited him for leaving the scene of an accident.

Jewelry Worth Thousands Stolen from Mercerwood Home
Thousands of dollars-worth of jewelry were stolen from the kitchen counter of a home on the 9300 block of Mercerwood Drive. The 52-year-old resident said she had left a diamond ring and a gold ladies wristwatch on the counter while workers were inside her home on business on July 2.

Senior Victimized by Credit Card Fraud
An 87-year-old resident received a letter from Wells Fargo informing him that he had applied for a bank credit card. A credit reporting agency later contacting him about the application for the credit card, which he reported was fraudulent, and the suspected his Identity had been stolen and used to apply.

Police Kick Man Out of Luther Burbank Park for Drinking
Police ejected a 58-year-man from Luther Burbank Park at 2:30 p.m. after he was found drinking alcohol on park property. The man was drinking from an open container, which is not permitted in Mercer Island parks. He was later issued a citation for the infraction.

Woman Banned from Albertsons
A 49-year-old resident driving a white Scion was banned from Albertsons Supermarket at 3:28 p.m. for one year for unspecified reasons.

Drunk Driver Arrested at Mercer Island Library
A 41-year-old resident was arrested about a block from his home on suspicion of DUI at 12:13 a.m. His bronze Range Rover was pulled over at the Mercer Island Library when police contacted him based on 911 calls concerning the vehicle driving with no headlights, striking a curb and driving on the wrong side of the road. He failed several field sobriety tests but refused to submit to a breathalyzer test and was arrested. Police later found a corkscrew in his pocket, and later transported him on a warrant to Overlake Hospital to test his blood for the presence of alcohol.

Mailbox Damaged
A homeowner on the 3400 block of 79th Ave. SE reported unknown suspects damaged his mailbox sometime overnight, prying it off its base by bending it back of its bracket. Total damages were estimated at $40.

Temper Tantrum Teen Breaks Mom's Windshield
A 15-year-old girl was throwing a temper-tantrum when she accidentally cracked the windscreen of her mother's Acura MDX at 3:20 p.m. by slapping it while it was parked on the 3600 block of 88th Ave. SE. The girl became upset after her mother reneged on a promise to take her to the mall to shop for goods she said she needed for summer camp.

Dry Cleaning Employee Loses Keys
A 26-year-old employee of Corry's Dry Cleaners on SE 78th St. accidentally left her keys on a bench outside the business and could not find them when she returned later to the same spot at 4:40 p.m. The silver and leather Cartier key chain held a key fob for a Mercedes-Benz and 4-5 additional keys.

Ex-Husband Drops off Son Too Close to Home, Violates Court Order
An ex-husband dropped off his 5-year-old son directly in front of his ex-wife's house at 2:25 p.m., allegedly violating a restraining order issued on July 2. The order may not have been yet served on the ex-husband.

Police Dust Woman's Credit Card for Fingerprints in ID Fraud
A 44-year-old resident reported her credit card was used fraudulently at 11:36 a.m. at various locations on Mercer Island, Kirkland and in Seattle over the past two days. The woman was able to provide the credit card to police which was dusted for fingerprints.

July 8

Range Rover Prowled in Town Center
The 28-year-old owner of an unlocked Range Rover was broken into sometime over the past few days while it was parked on the 3200 block of 80th Ave. SE. A subwoofer was taken from the rear of the vehicle, and an iPod and some change were taken from the front. Total losses are estimated at $800.

Explosion Rocks Island Crest Way Near Town Center
An unknown subject set off a common improvised explosive device at 8:14 p.m. in an empty parking lot on the 3000 block of Island Crest Way, causing no damage.
