520 Tolling Will Start in December, WSDOT Says

The state agency said problems with its vendor are being addressed and promises tolling will be implemented — eight months later than originally proposed.

Tolling on the State Route 520 bridge is now set to begin in December, the Washington State Department of Transportation announced in a news release today.

Tolling on the bridge was , but problems with WSDOT's toll operations vendor, Electronic Transactions Consultants Corp., have led to delays.

WSDOT officials said they are confident all of these issues will be resolved by December.

“It has been no secret that we’ve had challenges getting this system up and running, and the work has been more difficult than we anticipated,” Dave Dye, WSDOT deputy secretary, said in the news release. “The requirements we’ve established are rigorous because we want to be totally accountable for the tolls that are collected. This doesn’t mean it can’t be done—it just means we’re on the cutting edge of tolling technology in Washington and it has taken longer to ensure that everything is ready.”
