Bertlin Picks up Endorsements
Former Mayor Elliot Newman, Sierra Club of Washington State, and National Women's Political Caucus of Washington State endorse Bertlin, her campaign announced
Debbie Bertlin’s campaign has announced that the Sierra Club of Washington, former Mercer Island Mayor Elliot Newman, and the National Women’s Political Caucus of Washington State support her run for Mercer Island Council Position 7. is competing against , for the seat he currently holds in the only contested race on the Island this election season.
In press releases Bertlin’s campaign announced that Sierra Club of Washington State has endorsed her, citing her work as Chair of the Mercer Island Open Space Conservancy Trust and her support, and daily use, of public transportation, as well as leadership in improving Luther Burbank playground.
The campaign also announced that Elliot Newman, Mercer Island Mayor from 1990 to 1993 and City Council member from 1988 to 1995, has offered his endorsement as well.

"With important decisions coming before the Council that will impact Mercer Island for years and decades to come, it is time to have a more diverse dialogue within the Council and with the MI community," Newman is quoted in the press release. "New leaders are needed to represent the Island's changing demographic profile. Debbie is a great mix of the old and the new, having grown up on the Island and now raising her own family here. Combine that with her professional bona fides and proven civic commitment and you have the ideal City Councilmember. Her skills are needed now."
Finally, the bi-partisan National Women's Political Caucus of Washington State also endorses Bertlin, according to a campaign press release. The release notes that only one woman currently serves on the Mercer Island City Council, and none have been elected since 1999.
