City, Parks Officials Make Appeal to Save Summer Celebration Fireworks Show

Cut from the city budget in 2010, generous sponsorship donations by Farmers New World Life, the Mercer Island Community Fund and private individuals saved the show in 2011.

City Hall and the Mercer Island Parks & Recreation Department are once again soliciting community support again this year to put on the traditional free Summer Celebration! Firework show on Saturday, July 14, 2012.  

The fireworks show is a fantastic display set off from a barge in Lake Washington near . Last year, over 7,000 attendees watched from the park at a festival that includes food vendors, inflatable toys, activities for children, and live musical entertainment.

Generous sponsorship donations by , the Mercer Island Community Fund and private individuals . Unfortunately this year’s event is in jeopardy of being cancelled again due to budgetary cut-backs unless $23,000 is raised through donations.

The city relies on sponsorships and donations for a handful of the Parks and Recreation events; , , and a number of recreation special events such as the Adventure Playground, the Fun Mobile, Community Camp Out, Day of Play, Breakfast with Santa, and special Senior lunches.

The show is scheduled to take place over on Saturday, July 14. Already this year the city has received Fireworks sponsorships from Overlake Hospital Medical Center, , and Mercer Island Medical Imaging.

The city is still soliciting direct, individual donations or small business donations can be made today online (by clicking here) through PayPal, or by mailing a check to: City of Mercer Island, 2040 -84th Avenue SE, Mercer Island, WA 98040; or by dropping off a donation at the or .  Business sponsorships of $1,000 or more can be arranged through the City of Mercer Island by contacting the festival director, Amber Britton at amber.britton@mercergov.org.
