Cyclists to Zoom Through Mercer Island Sunday for Seafair Triathlon

Part of the bike race routes for the triathlon will run onto Mercer Island's I-90 center roadway Express Lanes, closing the lanes on Sunday morning, July 21.

The annual Benaroya Research Institute Seafair Triathlon is returning to Mercer Island on Sunday, July 21, and with it come closures on I-90's express lanes.

The express lanes will close on Sunday at 5 a.m. for the Seafair Triathlon, and reopen at 11 a.m. They will reopen westbound and remain that way until Monday afternoon.

The express lanes are customarily set for eastbound traffic all weekend beginning at 2 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday morning, unless there is an adjustment to accommodate traffic heading to a special event.

The triathlon will start at 6:30 a.m. Sunday in Seattle's Seward Park. Part of the route for both the 12- and 20-mile long bicycle segments of the race will loop through Mercer Island via the I-90 Express Lanes on their way back to the Seward Park finish line.

The "Olympic" Route race will take racers on their bicycles over the I-90 floating bridge onto Mercer Island and then turn them around at the express lane gates near the East Mercer on/off-ramps.

The "Sprint" Route will take racers to Mercer Island the same route but turn them around at the 74th Avenue South off-ramp.

Around 500 racers total are expected to compete.
