Final City Tree Planting Program Event This Weekend

City Hall is offering saplings at a subsidized rate to local residents to increase tree cover and reduce soil erosion.

is encouraging Island residents interested in purchasing native trees for planting to attend the last of the season on Nov. 20, according to a city press release.

City staff will have native trees for sale at a reduced rate and offer free delivery for purchases of six or more trees. This is the final opportunity to purchase discounted trees as part of the Neighborhood Tree Planting Program this year. The City offers Island residents this opportunity with support from the King Conservation District.

The goals of the program include the following:

  • Provide native trees to Island residents at a low cost.
  • Reduce our carbon footprint by sequestering more carbon in trees (trees, especially large conifers like Western red cedar, remove the greenhouse gas CO2 from the atmosphere during photosynthesis).
  • Reduce stormwater runoff (mature trees can hold up to 100 gallons of water during storms).
  • Increase wildlife habitat (especially when done in conjunction with the removal of invasive species such as ivy and blackberry).
  • Complement the working relationship between Island neighborhoods and the City.

Who can participate: Any Mercer Island resident.

What type of trees will be available: Vine Maple, Western Red Cedar (2 gallon size), and Mountain Hemlock. Supplies are limited.

How much will trees cost: Expected cost is $5.00 per tree.
