I-90 Bridge Seafair and Blue Angels Closures, Aug. 2-5

The annual visit of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels Aug. 2-5 for their aeronautical performances over Lake Washington and Mercer Island bring traffic and several road closures on Interstate 90 with them.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has announced the timing of planned closures on Aug. 2-5 of all lanes of the Interstate 90 floating bridge across Lake Washington for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels at this year’s Seafair festivities, according to a press release.

Here is the following information and dates for the I-90 shutdown:

Interstate 90 will be closed to all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, eastbound and westbound, mainline and express lanes, between Interstate 5 in Seattle to Island Crest Way on Mercer Island on the following dates:

  • Thursday, Aug. 2: 9:45 a.m. - noon & 1:15 - 2:30 p.m. (Practice)
  • Friday, Aug. 3: 12:45 p.m. - 2:40 p.m. (Practice)
  • Saturday, Aug. 4: 12:45 p.m. - 2:40 p.m. (Full show)
  • Sunday, Aug. 5: 12:45 p.m. - 2:40 p.m. (Full show)

The bridge will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists up to 30 minutes prior to posted closure times, including West Mercer Way from Roanoke Way to the SE 24th. Please be advised that access on West Mercer Way from Roanoke Way to the 2100 block of West Mercer Way will be limited only to residents and their guests. Please alert your guests so they are prepared to provide your address to police in order to drive through this area during the closures.

The I-90 express lanes will close at 9 a.m. on Thursday and at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The lanes will reopen to eastbound traffic by 3:30 p.m. each day.

I-90 east of Mercer Island will NOT be closed during the performance, although drivers should note that heavy congestion during these closures often restricts access to the exits.

The city is also urging residents to travel off or on the Island one hour prior to and following the bridge closures to avoid traffic backups.

For more detailed information, visit www.mercergov.org/seafair or call the city's I-90 information line at 206-275-7690.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.

The Jury is still out. I liked the "Old Patch". J
