New License Plates to Support Music Education

Music supporters worried about funding for music education will have an additional, state-sponsored way to chip in starting next year.

The Legislature has passed a bill, sponsored by Rep. Marcie Maxwell (D-Renton), authorizing special vehicle license plates sporting a “Music Matters” design.

“We must acknowledge the essential value of music education and continue to promote a well-rounded curriculum for all Washington students,” Maxwell said in a statement.

House Bill 1329 makes it possible to create and sell “Music Matters” special license plates to benefit music education programs in state schools. music programs — which sent their marching band to , and Jazz Ensemble which — relies heavily on direct contributions from local boosters to support the programs. Around one-third of the student body is a member of the marching band, and the school district is trying to do it's part to accommodate participation by announcing plans earlier this week to enlarge the music classroom.

In 2009, local donors raised tens of thousands of dollars for the marching band to replace 30-year-old band uniforms that were — in some cases — held together by duct tape.

Maxwell partnered on the legislation with Music Aid Northwest, a Bellevue-based nonprofit aimed at promoting music awareness and performance in the region.

Maxwell’s skilled leadership and drive helped pave the way for a more promising future for music education statewide,” said Gigi White, secretary of Music Aid Northwest and wife of Alan White, drummer from the English rock band Yes. “We are grateful for the opportunity to make a difference here in Washington state.”

The new plates would cost $40 the first year and $30 for renewal, on top of the regular license tab fees. There are 24 special license plates available. Once signed by the governor, the law takes effect Jan. 1.

Music Aid Northwest is holding a contest to design the new plate. Entries are being accepted through May 15 and a winner will be chosen by the end of June. Details on how to submit a design are available here.
