New Luther Burbank Playground Ribbon Cutting Party Oct. 10

The new Mercer Island Parks play structure replaced outdated and non-ADA compliant equipment, suitable for children ages 2-12.

The Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department announced a date for the official unveiling of the new Luther Burbank Playground, located next to the park tennis courts and the Youth & Family Services and Parks Administration building.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Thursday Oct. 10, at 4 p.m., at the new playground.

Community input from two public meetings helped guide the design committee, comprised of Mercer Island residents, members from the Mercer Island Preschool Association and the Friends of Luther Burbank. The Mercer Island Preschool Association (MIPA) and the Parks and Recreation Department partnered to sell personalized paver bricks, and MIPA’s playground auction raising tens of thousands of dollars to help pay for this community project.

The equipment selected for the project includes a new zip line, merry-go-round, climbing web, drop zone, and new and improved embankment slides. Improved ADA accessibility was completed by using a new poured-in-place rubber surfacing product and creating a direct entrance to the second level of the playground from the adjoining raised walkway.

The playground installed at Luther Burbank Park includes structures suitable for children between the ages of 2 -12.  The new play structure has replaced outdated and non-compliant equipment that had reached the end of its useful life.
