Public Comment Welcomed on 6-Year City TIP

The City of Mercer Island is welcoming input into one of the city's largest annual infrastructure expenditures: street repairs and improvements.

The City of Mercer Island is currently seeking comments for the 2013-2018 Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP). The Plan covers roadway, pedestrian, bicycle and other transportation projects planned for the six-year period beginning in 2013.

The Mercer Island City Council will hold a Public Hearing at the May 21 Council Meeting in at 7 p.m. to discuss the preliminary draft of the 2013-2018  Six Year Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

The TIP public comment period will also give the public another chance to weigh in on one of the city's most devisive transportation issues in recent years — the so-called . Restriping of Island Crest Way this summer from 53rd Place up to 86th Avenue. But plans in 2014 for more resurfacing and repaving from 86th Avenue to SE 40th Street will appear in the TIP.

Any interested person(s) may appear and provide input. Written comments must be received by April 30. Click here to submit your comments online.

State law requires that the Plan be updated and adopted by elected officials annually (before July 1). Plan adoption by the City Council takes place following a public comment period and a public hearing. The TIP is scheduled for adoption at the Council’s regular meeting on June 18.

(Ed. Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that restriping of Island Crest Way will take place in 2014 and range from 86th Avenue to SE 40th Street. This is incorrect. Island Crest Way will be restriped in 2012 from SE 53rd Place to 86th Ave. SE. A second phase of improvements to Island Crest Way, a repaving and resurfacing project, is scheduled to take place from Merrimount Drive to SE 40th Street in 2014. Mercer Island Patch regrets the error.)
