Multi-Use Island Crest Way Trail Under Construction

A new gravel trail on the west side of Island Crest Way will connect Island Park Elementary School to Southeast 63rd Street.

Mercer Island Parks officials announced work on the west side of Island Crest Way began on July 22 to build a multi-use trail, connecting Island Park Elementary School to Southeast 63rd Street, according to a city press release.

Work on minor grading and other preparation of the current narrow uneven trail is currently underway, followed by field crews applying a new gravel surface during the week of August 19.

As a result, there will be a number of temporary trail closures and brief traffic delays; local signage explains the situation and neighbors have been notified.

When finished, the upgraded trail will offer a smooth six-foot wide surface, and provide an alternative and more efficient pedestrian and bicycle connection between the school and the Pioneer Park trail system to the south.

The project is budgeted for $85,000 and is scheduled for completion on Aug. 30.
