Safer Crosswalk Lighting for Island Crest Way

A number of pedestrians have been killed or injured trying to cross Island Crest Way in recent years.

As part of the City's continuing efforts to promote walking and biking on the Island, upgrades are planned to the in-pavement lighting of crosswalks located on Island Crest Way, according to a city press release.

This summer, in-pavement lights will be removed and replaced with a newer, highly visible Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB).Β  Studies of this new treatment have found it to be more effective at encouraging drivers to yield to pedestrians. These simple retrofits can be covered with general operating funds.

The RRFB's are also more energy-efficient and will be easier to maintain than the current in-pavement light system, which are failing and no longer maintainable due to lack of parts.Β  Pavement lights are not well suited for the Pacific Northwest, where snow, water and leaves can affect the visibility and lifespan.

The beacons are installed on the pedestrian or school crossing sign and are activated by pushing the crosswalk button. The light flashes in an alternating "wig-wag" pattern, which is very visible and is in the line-of-sight for all motorists β€” helping focus a driver's attention ahead and onto the pedestrian.
