Still Undecided? Web Resources for the 2012 Primary Election

If you're registered to vote in King County, you received a voter's pamphlet, but there are plenty more resources online to learn about candidates and issues before ballots are due Tuesday.

Though we've had our ballots for several weeks now, many of us are still mulling our choices for the primary, even as the today's Aug. 7 deadline looms.

Your ballot must be postmarked today or dropped off at one of King County's 15 drop boxes (Mercer Island actually has two post offices — in the South-end's inside , and the other in Town Center).

Washington has a top-two primary system, so in multiple candidate races, the top two vote-getters move forward to the general election, regardless of party affiliation. Meanwhile, some judicial elections

If you're looking for info on candidates, in addition to election 2012 articles on Mercer Island Patch there are a number of other online resources you can check out.

  • The following resource, Voting for Judges.org, can help you make sense of the judicial candidates if they are not familiar to you.
  • The League of Women Voters offers voters the opportunity to custom "build" a ballot that lets them look at candidate statements for any race on their ballot: http://www.washingtonvoter.org/
  • If you'd like to hear candidates speak for themselves, the Office of the Secretary of State has put together a Video Voters Guide.
  • If you're still feeling a little confused about the changes in districts for the upcoming elections, there's a very good interactive district finder map available from the Washington State Redistricting Commission.
  • If you don't have a paper copy of the 2012 Voters' Guide or prefer to read it online, check out Washington's Elections website, which also offers you an "I voted" e-sticker--a modern replacement for the old stickers we got at the local polling place.
  • If you'd like to go directly to the websites for the candidates on your ballot, instead of numerous searches, the website Politics1.com has all the candidates listed, with links directly to their campaign websites. Handy!
  • If you didn't get registered to vote in time for the primary, there's still time for the general election, and a new way to register in Washington--the MyVote Facebook App.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
