Stoplights Arrive at 77th Avenue Southeast

The long-anticipated four-way traffic signals are being installed along SE 27th Street at the intersections of 77th and 78th avenues.

Work-crews were busy erecting new in Town Center Monday as part of long-planned improvements to manage cars, trucks and along one of Mercer Island's busiest streets.

The Town Center business district intersections along SE 27th Street at 77th and 78th avenues near , and are being converted from 4-way stops to stoplights.

estimates the cost of the work for the two stoplights is $1,180,000.

City Engineer Patrick Yamashida said more work on the traffic lights is needed before they are switched on, such as wiring and synchronization with another stoplight at Island Crest Way. He said the signal should be operational sometime after Thanksgiving.

Until the light is functional, motorists must continue to navigate the intersection as a four-way stop.
