The domestic cat is the most popular pet in the United States, with numbers ranging between 148 and 188 million individuals. From an ecological perspective, domestic cats have no native range and, therefore, are a non-native species in natural ecosystems worldwide. This means that many native prey species, in particular birds, have no evolved defenses against this introduced predator and many wildlife species are suffering as a result.
