MI Girls Basketball Trounced by Bellevue 46-28

The Islanders (1-3, 1-5) had some success with the press, but had a tough time getting the offense going

Mercer Island girls basketball lost big to Bellevue Friday night, 46-28.

While things looked do-able in the first quarter, Bellevue pulled away in the second quarter by dominating rebounds on both ends and keeping the Islanders to 3 points. At the half, Bellevue led 20 - 14, and the slaughter continued as the Islanders kept missing their shots and the Wolverines kept racking them up at the other end. By the fourth quarter, MI was down 18 points, 39-21.

It's been a tough start for this year's girls team, a younger team with only two seniors. They have yet to find a rhythm when the going gets tough. Junior Christina Williamson is still out with a broken finger, and should help on the rebounding when she returns.

Coach Jamie Prescott acknowledged that this is a rebuilding year, but was diasppointed in the lack of effort and execution tonight.

"We have to go back to our roots and live my motto that I brought to the program eight years ago: Play hard. Have fun. We've lost sight of that and need to refocus," Prescott added. "The team seems too nervous and uptight."

Highlights included a few steals by Junior guard Savannnah Reid, and three points by Senior Lauren Ellis when after making her first free throw, she missed the second only to grab the rebound and put it in for two.

The Islanders lost a close game to Mt Si on Dec. 2, but handled Sammamish with ease on Dec. 7. The Lady Islanders travel to Redmond for a non-conference game Monday Dec. 12, and then to Liberty Dec. 15  for a tough matchup that starts at 7:30 p.m.
