Girls Basketball Wins Division, MVP Honors at San Diego Tournament

Islander guards Kris Brackmann and Julia Blumenstein were named to the All-Tournament division team, with Blumenstein honored as MVP.

The Mercer Island varsity girls basketball team went 3-0 this weekend to win their division at the Surf N' Slam San Diego Hoop Classic in San Diego, California.

The Islanders (8-2) defeated Golden Valley (CA), 60-12 on Dec. 27 and University Prep (CA), 56-34 on Friday before facing Innisfail (Alberta, Canada) on Saturday, 52-6 to win their division.

Islander guards Julia Blumenstein, Kris Brackmann and center Christina Williamson were each honored with "Player of the Game" awards. Brackmann and Blumenstein were also named to the All-Tournament division team, with Blumenstein honored as division MVP.

Arch-rival Mt. Si, which played in different division, finished second to Philomath High School (OR), 43-40.

Islander Girls Hoops face their next opponent, Bellevue (9-1), on Jan. 4 at 6:30 p.m., the first game in a doubleheader, followed by the boys varsity game at 8 p.m. at the Mercer Island High School Gym.
