Islander Bats Swinging in Moses Lake

All three of Mercer Island High School Baseball squads racked up victories this weekend in Moses Lake.

Mercer Island High School's 2012 baseball season took a sun-filled detour to Moses Lake this weekend for double header games for the varsity, junior varsity and "C" team squads against Moses Lake and Union High School (Vancouver).

Overall, the 3 MIHS teams went 5-1 for the day on Saturday. The Varsity team won their 2 games in convincing fashion, dominating Union 12-1 and soundly defeating Moses Lake 9-4. In both games, the Islanders senior pitching duo of Max Dammeier and Hunter Goldberg gave the 2 opponents no chance at all to compete. In the first game against Union, Dammeier pitched a 5 inning complete game, striking out 9 and allowing just 1 hit and 1 unearned run on only 77 pitches. In the nightcap against host Moses Lake, Goldberg also pitched 5 innings, allowing 1 hit and no runs with 5 strikeouts on an equally efficient 78 pitches.

The MIHS bats were also ready for action in both games. Dammeier led the team on the offensive side as well, going 5-6 for the day with 2 doubles and 4 RBI. Junior Matt Orehek also was huge in both games, producing 4 hits in 7 at bats with 3 doubles and 3 RBI. Chris Lawler added a 3-run double, Steven Petrie hit a home run and Phil Pugel went 2-4 with an RBI.

The varsity squad continues its preseason schedule this week with games at rival Newport HS on Thursday and at 2011 4A State Champ Bothell HS on Saturday.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
