Mercer Island Awarded WIAA Scholastic Cup Third Year in-a-Row

Mercer Island was awarded the highest point total of any school — regardless of classification — in the state.

The overall prowess of Mercer Island's student-athlete was recognized Thursday as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced is one of six winners of the WIAA/Washington Army National Guard Scholastic Cup champions for 2010-11.

Based on overall athletic achievement and sportsmanship, the Scholastic Cup is the WIAA’s most prestigious annual school award. The yearlong competition is designed to determine the top school in each of the six WIAA classifications.

"What a tribute to the hard work of our students and staff," said Mercer Island Schools Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. "It is quite an honor to be recognized as scholar athletes and scholastic leaders in our community for multiple years in a row! I am so proud of all involved, making this recognition possible."

This is the fourth year in a row that Mead and King’s have won the Scholastic Cup and the third year in a row for Mercer Island and Bear Creek. Mercer Island High School Principal John Harrison attributed the high school's athletics office, including MIHS Athletic Director Craig Olson, coordinators Ann Miesner and Debbie McKenzie and Atheltic Trainer Shannon Higgins.

"This award means more than most because it acknowledges academics and athletics/activities," he said. "I'm proud of our kids and their coaches and teachers and appreciative of the work of our athletic staff ... I am also appreciative of the support of parents and booster clubs."

The Scholastic Cup is awarded to the schools that compile the highest Scholastic Cup points based on their participation and finish at the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships. The top eight schools in each of the WIAA Academic State Championship categories and classifications also receive Scholastic Cup points.

In an ongoing effort to promote sportsmanship, the Association incorporates a sportsmanship component into the Scholastic Cup award. Schools receive Scholastic Cup points for displaying outstanding sportsmanship throughout the school year.  Schools with no more than one student or coach ejection in all varsity sports for the school year receive 25 Scholastic Cup points. Schools lose points on a progressive basis for the second, third and fourth varsity player or coach ejection throughout the year. Schools with five or more ejections are disqualified from the Scholastic Cup competition. All sportsmanship points are added or deducted after the conclusion of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Spring State Championships.
