MIHS DECA Club Sends 11 to International Conference in Utah

14,000 students from all fifty states, Germany, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam will gather for networking event.

Eleven students from 's Accounting, International Entrepreneurship and Marketing classes qualified for the highly selective International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Salt Lake City at the end of April. 

In Salt Lake City, 14,000 students from all fifty states, Germany, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam will gather for networking, competition and leadership development.

In order to get there, the MIHS students faced intense competition at this year’s State DECA event — many of the 40 events had over 60 teams or individuals competing, and only the top 6 teams advanced to the ICDC conference.

DECA is an international organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.  “DECA has really helped me with my presentation and communication skills and taught me how to think on my feet,” says junior, Jack Pearl, of his experience.

The eleven students who qualified for the national competition at the end of April will be busy preparing for the following events:

Olivia Rosen & Emily Morse- Marketing Communications (1st in State)

Tanner Ranz & Ethan Vu- Sports and Entertainment Promotion Plan (3rd in State)

Devlin Conway & Brandt Waesche- Sports and Entertainment Promotion Plan (5th in State)

Peter Clark & Chris Roth- Hospitality Management (5th in State)

Alberto Gonzales- Human Resource Management (6th in State)

Max Goetschel- Restaurant Management (6th in State)

Jack Pearl- Accounting (7th in State, attending as alternate)

Their experience in Salt Lake City will not only help them gain valuable problem-solving and communication skills, but also the opportunity to develop relationships with business leaders and other business-minded students from around the world.
