MIHS Radio Broadcast Students Win Awards

"Hot Jamz" format proves that real world training has an impact on Mercer Island teens.

radio students came home with eight awards from the fourth annual Washington State High School Radio Conference and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 19, at .

“This shows great growth for the MIHS radio program, with twice the number of winning entries as last year, and four times as many as 2009” said Nathan Friend, MIHS broadcast instructor and general manager of station, . “I’m very excited about the student’s big win!”

The awards ceremony took place in Peninsula’s Milt Boyd Auditorium. Individual and school honors were awarded in 11 competitive categories centered on radio news, on-air performance, sports, audio production, and public service.

Eight high schools from around Washington State entered last year’s competition. Mercer Island High School captured a first place in Commentary last year, along with two second places awards for Underwriting and Team Newscast, and a third place for PSA Series.

Co-sponsor for the event, Broadcast Supply Worldwide of Tacoma, provided a pair of broadcast-quality headphones for the winners in each competitive category.

KMIH-FM, Hot Jamz Radio, 88.9 and 94.5FM is a fully functional radio station operated by students and volunteers at Mercer Island High School. The station features music, along with student news and public affairs programming.
