Record Numbers of Mercer Island Students Begin School Sept. 3

The MISD reported 4,357 students in May 2013 for it's semi-annual district-wide student headcount — the highest number of enrolled students since 1979.

More than 4,000 students returned or began classes yesterday for the 2013-14 academic year in the Mercer Island School District (MISD).

“Thanks to the incredible MISD staff, our wonderful students and their families, our school year has had a productive and exciting start,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. “The energy I saw in our classrooms is a testament to the dedication of our team to prepare students to be compassionate, innovative and collaborative in an ever-changing, global community.”

Preliminary figures show slightly more students than the budgeted enrollment of 4,092 full-time equivalent students at the district’s three elementary schools, middle school, high school and alternative program. The actual number of students is much higher, due to state half-day funding for Kindergarten.

Last school year, the MISD reported 4,357 students in May 2013 for it's semi-annual district-wide student headcount — the highest number of enrolled students since 1979.

The district expects those numbers to shift somewhat throughout the academic year.

West Mercer Elementary School Principal Rich Mellish has always enjoyed the first day of classes. “The energy and enthusiasm on the first day was a joy to experience,” Mellish said. “I am thrilled our students have arrived and excited to be working with this staff team.”
