Reminder: MISD Urges Parents to Prepare for Winter Disruptions

The Mercer Island School District is part of a regional system that notifies parents of school closures when poor weather creates hazardous local conditions.

The Mercer Island School District is urging parents to prepare for winter weather by subscribing to an automated alert service and make alternate plans for their children in case of school closures.

According to the MISD, personnel monitor forecasts and conditions on the roadways well ahead of the anticipated arrival of a storm. The school district said it also consults with police, state patrol and other school districts that are in the storm’s path prior to taking any action.

Local schools usually close down during a scheduled school day at least once a year, due to inclement weather conditions that pose a hazard to students.

Closures occur when travel conditions are unsafe or when school environmental systems (heating, sanitary services, etc.) are not working.

Decisions for late starts or closures are made by the Superintendent's office no later than 5:30 a.m. and posted to the Public Schools Emergency Communication System website. All area radio and television stations get their information from this site and then begin broadcasting updates typically in a district's alphabetical order. In addition, this site allows individuals to sign up for automatic email alerts. The district will also posts updates on the main district page
