Scholarship Named After Pres. Obama's Mother Now Accepting Applications

The 2013 Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship is an award of $5,000 for higher education expenses available to female students graduating from Dunham's alma mater, Mercer Island High School.

Trustees of the 2013 Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship announced that applications for the academic award are now available at the counseling office at Mercer Island High School and online at www.dunhamscholarship.com.

Dr. Dunham, the mother of President Barack Obama, was a 1960 graduate of Mercer Island High School and a life-long learner with a strong belief in economic and social equality for people around the world - especially women. After earning a Ph.D in anthropology, she lived and worked in Indonesia helping villagers develop self-sustaining economic programs using their skills in traditional crafts and toolmaking.

The Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by a group of Mercer Islanders and former schoolmates to honor her memory, the education she received at MIHS, her commitment to service, and her kind and generous spirit.

A $5,000 college scholarship will be awarded to a female student currently enrolled in the senior class at MIHS who demonstrates a passion and commitment to the values and goals embodied in the life and work of Stanley Ann Dunham.

Recent winners of the scholarship include Kyle Wunderlin in 2011 and Suzanne Gaber in 2012.

The deadline for receipt of all application materials is March 8, 2013. A ceremony will be held in April to award the scholarship to the recipient.

How cool. Mercer Island connected to the POTUS and his family. Great tribute to his mothers legacy. We need to invite Obama to present the scholarship!

Hey Ken, They should start a petition to get the president to visit the next time he's in the area. A lot of organizations have invited him a number of times but so far, no love — He even drove through Mercer Island last year but didn't stop.
