School District Calls Special Meeting Thursday on Overcrowding

The Mercer Island School District announced Monday that a Special School Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Mercer Island School District administration buidling's Board Room, from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m.

The purpose of the meeting is to conduct a linkage meeting with members of the Mercer Island Schools Foundation and to discuss aspects of the overcrowding solutions and preliminary school designs.

A recent report delivered to the school district on preliminary designs estimated the cost of a new elementary school, a significant remodel of Islander Middle School and addition to Mercer Island High School could cost the district $90-$100 million.

The MISD reported 4,357 students in May 2013 for it's semi-annual district-wide student head-count β€” the highest level of enrollment in the district since 1979, when the school district was operating two additional school buildings.

The meeting is open to the public.

Located next to Mercer Island High School, the Mercer Island School District administration building is located at 4160 86th Ave SE.
