While Mercer Island Schools like West Mercer and Lakeridge have been participating in this event for several years, an inaugural nationwide Bike to School Day was held May 9, with thousands of schools participating.

The initiative is a local effort focused on promoting the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, a national campaign partially funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.
