Three Mercer Islanders Named Lacrosse All-Americans

Mercer Island and Bainbridge Island had three athletes each among the 14 recognized by the Washington State Chapter of US Lacrosse

The Washington State Chapter of US Lacrosse announced today that 14 high school student-athletes in Washington state have been named to the 2012 US Lacrosse All-American team.

The selections mark the first time since the awards were first made in Washington state in 1987 that as many as 14 local student-athletes have been named All-American or All-American Honorable Mention in a single year.

Local selections include three athletes who call Mercer Island home, Boys Lacrosse midfielder Connor Bernal and Girls Lacrosse attacker Elena Skouras, and Lakeside School midfielder Natalie Fox.

Other honorees include three players from Girls Varsity state champion Bainbridge High School (Kelsey Mackin, Grace Deery-Schmitt, Madeline Stevenson), two each from Boys Division I state champion Bellevue High School (Sam Leggett, Austin Boyd), Issaquah High School (Ben Director, Kole Lindor), and the Lakeside School's Makayla DeJong along with single selections from Archbishop Murphy High School (Mahealani Wong), Lake Washington High School (Cody Bernstein) and Redmond High School (Claire Monsaas).

Leggett, one of two Bellevue Wolverines honored in 2012, is the seventh student-athlete in state history to be named to the US Lacrosse High School All-American team for the second consecutive year.  He is the ninth student-athlete in Bellevue school history to receive the lacrosse award.

Student-athletes named to the US Lacrosse All-American Team are considered the best high school lacrosse players in the United States.  To be honored, student-athletes must be an All-State selection, must be in good standing at his or her school and must exhibit sportsmanship on and off the field.

Washington recipients are selected by a state committee made up of varsity coaches from eastern and western Washington as assigned by US Lacrosse.

Since 1987, a total of 90 student-athletes from Washington state (58 boys and 32 girls) have been named All-American or All-American Honorable Mention by US Lacrosse.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
