Around this time next week on Sunday, Sept. 2, will be wrapping up their lifesaving duties this summer at .
Mercer Island once staffed lifeguards at all three local beaches, including and , but those positions were eliminated — along with the city's own swimming beach water quality monitoring program — with cuts to the city budget in 2008 and 2010. A lifeguard staffing shortage also ended the beach season a week early last year.
