It was rainy, it was messy, but at the end of Friday's KingCo matchup with Liberty, the visiting Mercer Island Islanders (5-2, 4-1 KingCo) varsity football team gutted out a 7-3 victory.
After a scoreless half, Liberty got to the Islanders 3-yard-line but a key tackle by DB Patrick Nielson forced the Patriots to kick a field goal with 1:48 left to play in the third quarter.
On the next drive, the Islanders drove down the field to score the game's only touchdown with 11:18 left in the fourth quarter, then held on for the win.
In their next game, the Islanders homecoming clash is with the Mount Si Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 19. Mt. Si (6-1, 4-1 KingCo) will be looking to bounce back from a 49-10 loss to Bellevue.
