Coming off a 68-54 last Friday the Mercer Island Islanders are getting ready to take on their next foe in the form of the Sammamish Totems on Tuesday night.
Sammamish lost to Mercer Island (11-2, 6-1 KingCo 3A/2A) back on Dec. 7 by a score of 58-46 in what was the Totem’s first loss of the season. Senior point guard Derek Newhof keyed the victory for the Islanders leading them with 16 points. The loss was Sammamish’s first of the season but the Totems got hot after that contest winning six consecutive games and was ranked 9th in the state of Washington at the end of that streak. The Totems (9-4, 4-3) stubbed their toes after that though losing three consecutive games before snapping that losing streak Friday night by defeating the Liberty Patriots.
Sammamish is led by junior John Steinberg. The 6’4” Steinberg leads the Totems with 16.4 points per game but the Islander defense stymied him the last time out holding the young man to only 6 points. Mercer Island will look to repeat that accomplishment to sweep the season series with the Totems.
