Kangs Clip Islanders 12-11 in 11 Innings

Taking a two-run lead in extra innings, the Islanders gave back three in a dramatic come-from-behind win for the Kangs.

’s Chris Moore hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning to cap a three-and-a-half hour, back-and-forth 12-11 victory over state-ranked Mercer Island at  in Kirkland Friday night, the Kangs twice rallying with the game on the line.

The Islanders (4-2, 0-1 KingCo 3A/2A) led the entire game and were one strike away from ending the contest at 9-8 when a fielding error by second baseman Nick Holstead allowed Lake Washington's Spencer Jackson to score the tying run, sending the game into extra innings.

The game remained tied at 9-9 until Mercer Island scored two runs in the top of the 11th to take the lead before the  rallied to win. Lake Washington (4-4, 2-0) scored a total of three runs in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game going, then three more in the 11th to win.

“It was a wild game,” said LW coach Derek Bingham. “Kind of par for the course at PK (Peter Kirk Park). Seems like we have one game a year that’s like that there.

Mercer Island had 14 hits, with Evan Thompson going 3-for-6 with an RBI, David Oppenheim 2-for-4 with a homer in the second inning, and four RBIs and Cameron Ogard 2-for-6 with two RBIs.

For Lake Washington, Moore went 2-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs, and Victor Mayorquin had a big night as well, going 4-for-7 with a two-run double in the crucial seventh inning. 

Islander batters hammered Spencer Jackson for 10 hits in four innings but the Kangs starting pitcher redeemed himself by scoring twice, including the tying seventh-inning run. 

LW's Bingham also credited pitchers Bob Cruikshank and Duke Fanning, who both threw three scoreless innings in relief.

“It was a good game to show our mettle,” Bingham said. “We had chances to win in the eighth, ninth and 10th with guys in scoring position, but just couldn’t get them home.”

Mercer Island resume play tonight at 6 p.m. against Mt. Si , weather permitting, at . The game will resume play from an April 6 contest that was suspended in the top of the second inning with the Islanders leading, 3-0, with one out due to rain.
