Mercer Island Little League Wins State Championship

The Mercer Island's Little League Majors All-Stars (11-12) team heads to San Bernardino, CA to play in the Northwest Regional Little League Tournament on Aug. 3-11.

After losing their first game 10-0, the comeback kids from Mercer Island's Little League Majors All-Star team won eight straight and defeated a team from South Kitsap Western to take the state championship title in Walla Walla on Saturday, July 28.

Mercer Island lost to District 10 champs Kent on July 21 but rallied in the loser's bracket with wins (scores in parentheses) over PacWest of Burien (4-2), Richland National (10-0), Glenwood (13-1), Kent (3-2), Walla Walla Valley (11-1), and Mill Creek (13-2), before defeating South Kitsap Western twice on Saturday, 6-5 and 11-1.

Coached by local parents David Sandwith and Robin Fuchs, the Islanders have now earned a trip to the Aug. 3-11 Northwest Regionals in San Bernardino, CA.

"Our kids kept their focus and played one game at a time," said team manager Steve Poore. "They watched the Bellevue West team make a similar run in our District tournament and it gave them confidence. I am very proud of the kids and we hope to continue our success in San Bernadino."
