Mercerwood Water Polo Takes 4 of 5 Midlakes Titles

Mercerwood Shore Club's dominated the 2012 Midlakes water polo tournament on Sunday, Aug. 19 a month after the club's swimmers seized their fourth-straight Midlakes swim title.

It's been a great summer for the Mercerwood Manta-Rays.

The water polo programs won 4 of the 5 the Midlakes League Championship games at held at the (MICC) on Sunday, August 19, 2012.

The air was heavy with expectation — a successful 2012 Midlakes water polo regular season ended with all five of Mercerwood's teams — 10 & unders, 12 & unders, 14 & unders, 17 & unders and Men's Open — entered the championship tourney all as No. 1 seeds (this year's Women's Open competition was cancelled).

All but the 17 & unders won their respective age group championships and the 17's finished as runners - up to Samena Swim and Recreation club of Bellevue. Coaches Kevin Goodwin and , who 'grew up' as members of the Mercerwood Shore Club led all 5 teams in their successful season. The Mercerwood Shore Club Water Polo program has approxiamately 60 active participants among all age groups.

The Midlakes Swim League began the annual water polo championship in the late 1960s and it is contested by 14 of the 27 Midlakes Clubs. The league is generally considered one of the top venues in the area for competitive club swimming and aquatic sports for children ages 8-18.

According to its website, the league involves over 3,000 youth athletes from late May thru August in swimming, diving and water polo.
