MI Lacrosse Proceeds to State Semi-Final in Decisive 15-2 Win Over Kings Way

Mercer Island is handed a chance to avenge last-year's heartbreaking state championship loss to rival Bellevue in a semi-final rematch next Wednesday at 8 p.m. (May 25) at Islander Stadium.

It was rapture for the , who soundly trounced Kings Way Christian School in Friday's boys state lacrosse tournament quarterfinal match.

held the Knights to two goals while piling it on in a well-rounded scoring effort led by Matt Shields (5 Goals, 1 Assist), along with Connor Bernal (2 G, 3 A, 3 ground balls), Doug Mahoney (2 G, 2 GB), Zac Stickney (2 G, 1 A, 3 GB), Alex Robbs (2 G, 1 A, 2 GB) and Alex Rorem (2 G). Islander goalie Brian Bernstein had 6 saves. 

In the regular season, the Islanders beat Kings Way in Vancouver by only two goals (7-5), but sent a "take no prisoners" message last night by keeping the league's highest scorer, the Knight's Jack Beall, who had an average of 10 goals per game, to only two goals.

The Islanders, who reeled-off 10 straight wins to finish the regular season, earned an opening round bye in the playoffs after finishing the .

Perhaps the Islanders were hoping to send a message to the , who beat Mercer Island in last year's state final by one goal in sudden-death overtime. Bellevue beat Curtis in their quarter-final last night 8-6. The Islanders are vying for a chance to return to the state title game, Saturday, May 28 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

Islander Lacrosse Players Honored

Adding to Mercer Island's good news, Senior mid-fielder Doug Mahoney was  named an All-American selection. Mahoney had 43 goals, 11 assists and 49 ground balls this season. 

Junior mid-fielder Connor Bernal is one of 122 players selected to tryout for the USA U-19 team; tryouts taking place at the University of Maryland in July.
