PNW Women's Tennis Amateurs Win USTA National Title

Players from Mercer Island, Issaquah and Bellevue represented the Robinswood Tennis Center in the tournament.

A team of amateur women's tennis players from Bellevue, Issaquah and Mercer Island claimed the USTA League Adult 18 & Over 2.5 National Championship last weekend at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.

The Pacific Northwest women’s team, which represents the Robinswood Tennis Center in Bellevue, Wash. dominated the Midwest Section team, 3-0, to win the women’s 2.5 crown.

They first edged the Mid-Atlantic Section women earlier Sunday morning, 2-1, to advance to the final.

“It feels amazing,” said PNW team captain Kris Kleinsmith, who credited coach Jason Chapman for much of the team’s success.

“We are so excited! We have an awesome team. We worked really hard. Our team bonded really well early on and supported each other.”

Nearly 400 miles to the southeast, the other USTA League National Championships for the 3.0 Adult 40 & Over divisions were decided in Tucson, Ariz., with USTA Southern winning the men’s event and the USTA Caribbean women also triumphant.

The season continues in Indian Wells on Friday, Oct. 11, with the Adult 40 & Over 3.5 National Championships.
